On a dreary day in January we decided to cheer ourselves up by booking tickets to another show, and on a dreary day in February we found ourselves taking out places in row C of the stalls to see the touring production of ?TellMe On A Sunday?.
The current production is a one woman show (other versions sometimes have a chorus singing and / or dancing in the background). The woman in question is Marti Webb, a singer who has been working in the west end for many years, but who I?d never heard of until now. (In comparison, the dancing friend who came with me had never heard of Wayne Sleep?) ?Tellme on a Sunday? is truly her show, having been written for her by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Don Black back in the 1970s. going to work in front of a decidedly more critical audience. He contacted Richard Maltby Jnr, and he agreed to revamp the show.
Maltby cut out most of the more awful songs (I'm very you, you're very me; The last man in my life (which got stuck into Aspects of Love - I think; and a few others) and added some new ones - like Unexpected Song. The show was built around Bernadette Peters, and a very strong cast.
This was fortunate, because Bernadette Peters was the only thing the critics liked about the show - and it ran for 2.5 years on Broadway as a result.
