Advantages: Two beautiful female folk singers Disadvantages: There are only 10 songs
The first CD from KateRusby appeared in 1995 in conjunction with Kathryn Roberts (lead singer with the band Equation who also include Seth Lakeman amongst their number). This album is a collection of 10 great traditional folk songs with all songs arranged by the girls.
The songs are mainly about relationships where men go off to fight in wars and the women sit at home waiting for them. The album listing is:
1: Recruited Collier
2.: Ned On The Hill
3.: Lorry Ride
4.: Queen And The Soldier
5.: Courting Is A Pleasure
6.: Constant Lovers
7.: Dark Eyed Sailor
8.: Hunting The Hare
9.: Plains Of Waterloo
10.: Exile
Personally my favourite songs are The Queen and the Soldier rearranged from Suzanne Vega's original and brilliantly sung by Ms Roberts and Plains of Waterloo where again Ms Roberts hauntings ...
Advantages: The new school of FOLK Disadvantages: I really don't think there are any!
The first time I saw this young lady perform, I didn't know what to expect. All I was told, was that I was going to see a folk guitarist-singer. Immediately my mind was full of Folk Stereotypes: I was imagining an audience of beards, banjo's and bad dress sense. Whilst some of those things did come true (mainly the beards), I did also notice a large youthful contingent awaiting Ms. Rusby on the stage.
She's young. She's energetic. She's funny. She's incredibly down-to-earth. But above all she's a brilliant performer: with the support of her amazingly versatile musician-husband and her incredibly enthusiastic band, KateRusby is a must-see.
I wasn't a huge folk fan myself, but KateRusby really does challenge the folk stereotype, bringing folk bang up to date! She and her band has really converted me to a folkie! Will she convert ...

Advantages: a few truly superb songs Disadvantages: A few weaker links.
Rather a morbid title I realise, but it is in fact one of the tracks from what has proved to be quite a good album. Being something of a folk devotee, I had approached KateRusby with scepticism - she's 'made it' into normal music outlets, which must mean she has sold out and just done an album of easy listening? Well not actually quite true. This is certainly the sort of album that non-folkies might get along with, but its true to some good traditional roots as well.
It's certainly morbid eough to be 'proper' folk - spend any time in a folk club and you soon find that most of the traditional songs are about sex and/or death (except for the ones about fishing, but there it is.)
"Sir Eglamore" an old, and rather silly song about a knight and a dragon, set to music by Kate. It has all the 'lanky down dillies' you could possibly ask ...
Personnel: Kate Rusby (vocals, guitar); Lester Simpson, Davy Steele (vocals); Ian Carr, John Doyle, Malcolm Stitt (guitar); John McCusker (banjo, cittern, fiddle, viola, whistle, piano); Alison Brown, Andy Seward (banjo); Jackie Wells (cello); Michael McGoldrick (flute, whistle); Andy Cutting (accordion); Neil Yates (brass); Conrad Ivitsky, Ewen Vernal (bass); Francis MacDonald (drums); James Mackintosh (percussion). Recorded between 1996 & 2002.
