I first saw Tenacious D on Jonathan Ross and howled with laughter. Their role-played rock antics combined with their improbable appearance were irresistably funny. Also they are such great singers and musicians. They were a breath of fresh air with their humour and talent.
However, my daughter also thought they were great and bought their album. She's fourteen and happily not into smoking and swearing like so many of her mates. Lucky break for me as her dad.
But it also means that when she played the album, bought on the strength of the great single, the swearing struck her as offensive. There's a lot of it. Objectionable amounts of it.
There's no doubting the brilliance of tracks like 'Wonderboy' and the 'Best song in the world, tribute,' but much of the comedy here relies on absurd spoken sketches. Still, anyone who's seen Jack Black in 'Rock School' will appreciate that this isn't a problem as his quirky humour is worth listening too.
However, the gratuitious swearing goes too far. Not only does it not make the material any funnier, but it actually removes much of the duo's potential audience. In my daughter's case, for example, she was so disasppointed and put off by all the profanity when she'd been expecting great comedy that I bought the album off her so that she wouldn't lose out financially.
I'm happy with a few tracks because they're hillarious, but I couldn't recommend this album to anyone except drunken students which is probably it's intended audience. It's not one for the kids at all - don't be misled by the film 'Rock School', just because Jack Black works with children in that.
The same thing without the swearing would have been really good. Disappointing given the tremendous entertaintment value of Jack Black and the evident comedy talent and energy here.
