Warning this album and review contain adult language and references which may offend some and is not really suitable for younger readers.
Genre- Rock, comedy rock, with elements of folk metal Number of tracks- 21 ish Total length- 50 mins approx Released- 2001 Highest chart position-US #33, UK #38 Parental Advisory is mentioned- it feature sexual references quite frequently and following that course bad language
As the new album will be out soon and some of you may have seen Tenacious D- Band members are Jack Black, better known for his film appearances in Shallow Hal, School of Rock and perhaps the more recent Nacho Libre. The other member is Jack's friend Kyle Gass, who you may not recognise as well, as he's not had major roles in films like Black has, but that's where you may know him from, Shallow Hal. The band started out on a television show on HBO, which I don't think was broadcast this side of the Atlantic. This is their first studio album;
Tracks
Kielbasa 3.30 - Basically it's a song about having anal sex and if by now you haven't guessed it Kielbasa is actually a euphemism for Jack's dick.
One Note Song 1.23- Mainly Jack and Kyle talking about robots masquerading as people and Jack trying to pass of one note as a viable song.
Tribute 4.08- Never released in the UK, but known as their best single and video any way. The premise to this song is Jack and Kyle singing about the time a demon told them to play him the best song in the world, or he'd eat their souls. They did play the best song in the world, but they forgot it, and as the song goes 'this is just a tribute'. *Look out for the cameos of Ben Stiller as a disgruntled shopper and Dave Ghrol's even less obvious appearance as the demon. This got slightly higher in the Kerrang 100, 17.
Wonder Boy 4.06- The bands first single and only released here in the UK in December 2002 and it only got to 34 (philistines!) , this song is Jack singing about a superhero
called Wonder Boy and his rival Nasty Man, which is basically him and Kyle, and they join forces to become Tenacious D. The video for this is slightly strange as it is about some guy medieval guys climbing a mountain, although saying that it did get to number 69 in Kerrang's Rock 100 this year. While searching for images of the video Wonder Boy, I also came across a game by Sega called Wonder Boy. Now did Jack and Kyle play this game and base the song on this? Well I don't know but if any one who does please feel free to let me know in the comments section.
Hard Fucking 0.35- Another speaking track, talking about whether hard fucking is right or wrong to do to a lady.
Fuck Her Gently 2.03- Third single released in U.S only, basically a song about the previous subject, fucking gently. Very adult song. The video is also cartoon devils and angels (Jack and Kyle) having sex. It's funny if you have a juvenile sense of humour. Apparently by the Ren and Stimpy artists.
Dio 1.41- This song would be classed as another tribute, to Ronnie James Dio (don't know who he is), but apparently he loved it and let them be in his own video even though the premise of the song is they love him but stop singing, so they can fill his shoes.
Inward Singing 2.13- Another talking part where Jack comes up with another stupid idea- inward singing, and then starts on a rant when Kyle rebuffs the idea. The Kyle quits.
Kyle Quit the Band 1.29- Song about the previous topic when Kyle quit, but then they got back together.
The Road 2.18- I think it's meant to b a song aout a drifter travelling on the road, singing life on the road is tough
Cock Pushups- Another talking song, where Jack tells Kyle that he does pushups using his cock in a bid to get fit for the ladies.
Lee 1.02- Never heard Lee said so many times, and it's more funny for me because my younger cousin is called lee so it kind of annoys him.
Friendship Test 1.30- Jack rings up and tries to trick Kyle with the friendship test by telling him he loves him.
Friendship 1.59- A song about friends.
Karate Schnitzel 0.36- Kyle eats Jack's schnitzel and lies about it, and when he does confess Jack karate chops him.
Karate 1.05 - Singing about the previous subject of Jack giving Kyle a karate chop for stealing his Schnitzel. I like this one.
Rock You Socks 3.32- Exactly what it says on the tin, a song that will rock your socks off.
Drive Thru 3.00- Rather long talking skit about Jack and Kyle going to the drive-thru, and being rather picky with the order.
Double Team 3.10- If you hadn't guessed by the title, this is another sex song, this time about Jack and Kyle trying to persuade a woman to have a threesome with them. The are definitely elements of 70's porno music in this.
City Hall 9.02- This is a song about 'sticking it to the man' as Jack would say in city hall, about them starting a riot and then starting a new society setting up their own laws including legal drugs, no more pollution and no more rich and poor. Then they end up killing each other in a struggle for control. 9 minutes is long for a song, but the song itself is about 7 minutes then there's a minute of silence and it goes on to another short skit. Apparently this is supposed to be a hidden track called Malibu Nights.
Album cover and art work; Slightly more controversial than the songs, mainly because the cover features a naked Kyle and Jack covered only by guitars standing in a pentagram with a devil behind them. When ever the video for Tribute is on, they never show the cover at the end because they deem it to obscene for early viewing. The back is not much better; in fact it's worse because they just swapped Jack and Kyle for a pair of naked babies. In the booklet there is another picture of Jack and Kyle prancing about in pants, not the nicest of images to think of, but probably better than the covers.
Why would you want to buy or listen to this? If you watched films like School of Rock and Shallow Hal then this might interest you, and also if you are a fan of the Foo Fighters. I think it mainly appeals to teenagers who enjoy dirty lyrics in songs, those who haven't got it already. If you like you rock with a fair bit of comedy, then this is pretty much packed with it. I mean I could always make comparisons with

Spinal Tap, who started off as joke band in a film and then went on to make real albums and real tours. I guess it would possibly be in that category. If you're just generally a rock fan then this may interest you too. There is the problem of vulgarity, the sexual references in the songs and swear words that may offend some people perhaps even a lot. It may offend people who can usually take a fair bit of bad language. The new album The Pick of Destiny will be out shortly- release date: 13-11-2006 as will the first track and video, also called POD, accompanied by the film which funnily enough is called POD. If you have seen that and it interests you then you may be this at the same time, just to hear what their previous work was like. There is also the Tenacious D: Complete Masterworks, which is a DVD about their live performance at Brixton Academy, London and also lots of behind the scenes footage and TV appearances. I also suggest the School of Rock soundtrack in relation to this as it has some great tracks on it itself. I suppose I should suggest Foo Fighters too as Dave is in both bands (and a few others), mainly Learn To Fly video as Jack and Kyle do a cameo in their video too, maybe also related bands like QOSTA (that's Queens Of The Stone Age if you don't know the abbreviation, and possibly Eagles Of Death Metal, I think Jack was in on of their recent videos. The album being a few years old now is around £7, but it depends on where you buy it from. If you wish to sample the music first HMV online have samples of the each of the tracks. http://www.hmv.co.uk/hmvweb/displayProductDetails.do?ctx=280;-1;-1;-1&sku=615610&locale=uk Alternatively it may be on one of the music channels or Kerrang radio every now and then, look out for rock video specials. I also have the video of Wonder Boy on my Myspace.com site, just look for me on there.
Their website is; http://www.tenaciousd.com/ Here you may get a music clip of POD.
My Opinion I bought this album after watching the School of Rock. I had seen Jack Black in smaller roles before like Cable Guy, but he didn't seem that funny. Then is saw School of Rock, which was so funny, and the music was really good too- convinced me to buy several other albums including the soundtrack. Then I saw the video for Tribute and I said wow he sings for real, I thought he was an actor. The song and the video stuck with me. Upon buying the album and importing it onto my computer, I was also introduced the magical song that is Wonder Boy and also the short but still good Karate. I don't really listen to the songs with heavy sexual references in, mainly because I get shouts from members of my family of outrage and disappointment that I'd have such vulgar songs on. It does make me wonder will POD be the same as this with talking skits or just totally songs. I am definitely going to buy it any way, because I have seen the video a few times and it was funny and just generally a great song. It's certainly not my favourite album, but it's high in the list, as is Tribute and Wonder Boy in my list of favourite songs.
To Ciao Members- As usually if you find any problems with my opinion, or there is anything you would like me to include that I didn't, as usually your comments are well appreciated.
