Advantages: The "best" of nick cave and the bad seeds, Cave's vocals, great songs, wonderful lyrics Disadvantages: Some "bad" songs
NickCave and the Badseeds put their best songs together on an album and this is what we end up with. A sixteen track CD, wich has songs dating right through their career together (almost). Cave got with the Badseeds in 1984 and this album goes as far back as that an all the way upto 1997 (The boatmans call). The album takes songs from each of the albums in this time peroid (though as the inlay booklet confess, not in chronological order).
Cave and the badseeds, have been described as being "Post-punk", "alt-rock" and "rock" all of these and more could be used to explain the bands sounds. Caves deep vocals as well as the musical arrangements which spand from simple to incredibly difficult, mixed with the dark and deep lyrics, allow this album to be a show case of NickCave and The BadSeeds.
So the songs list from their rather ...
Advantages: Great lyrics, Great songs, Great Concept, Great Album Disadvantages: You will become a lifelong fan of Cave, costing money,
Murder Ballads is possibly NickCave and the BadSeeds most well known album, partly thanks to the duet with Kylie Minogue, but mainly because it is one of the greatest albums ever released.
The concept was that each song would tell a tale of murder, amongst other subjects, and the addition of some guest stars playing the parts of different characters (PJ Harvey on "henry lee" and kylie on "where the wild roses grow") simply adds to the effect. It also finds Cave at his best lyrically, not only with his own brand new compositions, but also when taking traditional songs and giving them his own sadistic twist, as on what is possibly his heaviest and dirtiest ever song, "Stagger Lee".
When you take into account that all these tales are completely seperate, it is amazing how well the album flows together. The heavier tracks such as "The ...
Advantages: stunning lyrics, and melodies Disadvantages: a couple of slightly weak tracks
Looking back I've missed a number of seminal albums, as they passed me by. I remember being at Glastonbury in 1998 but don't remember seeing the wonderful NickCave and the BadSeeds, as I only knew him from his duet with Kylie Minouge ?Where the Wild Roses Grow?. Fast forward eleven years and his beautifully sublime album ?The Boatman Calls? is one of my most played albums. Released in 1997 The Boatmen Calls? is Cave's 10th studio album and very different from the ones that have come before such as the ?Murder Ballads? Gone are the tales of violence, instead we have Cave in a very mellow, reflective mood pondering on love, redemption, spirituality and his previous, often failed relationships. From laments and odes to P J Harvey (Black Hair, West Country Girl and Green Eyes) to the unravellings of his marriage (People Ain't no Good ...

Album Notes
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds: Nick Cave (vocals, harmonica, piano, Hammond organ, vibraphone, tambourine); Mick Harvey (acoustic & electric guitar, piano, organ, xylophone, bass, drums, percussion, programming, background vocals); Blixa Bargeld (guitar, slide guitar, background vocals); Roland Wolf (guitar, piano, organ); Kid Bongo Powers (guitar, background vocals); Thomas Wydler (drums). Additional personnel: Hugo Race (guitar, background vocals); Gini Ball, Audrey Riley, Chris Tombling (strings); Ian Davis (background vocals). Engineers: Tony Cohen, Flood, Chris Thompson. Recorded at Hansa Tonstudios and Vieklang, Berlin, Germany; Trident and The Strongroom, London, England; The Studio, Richmond, Australia between August 1987 and January 1988. The dark, poetic troubadour tendencies hinted at in Cave's work as early as his first album's cover of Leonard Cohen's "Avalance" blossom on TENDER PREY. In a style recalling Cohen and Tom Waits, Cave ups the lyrical ante considerably here. On gory detail-oriented, literate tunes like "Up Jumped the Devil" and "Mercy," Cave's second life as a novelist (he would soon author a book) is obvious. Here, the distance he achieves from his inner demons allows him to focus more on crafting his personal horror stories, making him seem like the Edgar Allen Poe of the rock world. The balladic approach introduced on the covers album KICKING AGAINST THE PRICKS also develops here, on melodic, piano-based songs like "Slowly Goes the Night" and "Watching Alice." On these, Cave recalls an earlier, similarly iconoclastic balladeer, Scott Walker. TENDER PREY proved a turning point for Cave, and it's one of his strongest albums.
Album Reviews
Q (12/99, p.171) - Included in Q Magazine's Best Gothic Albums Of All Time - "...A voodoo Elvis preoccupied with death and the devil, Cave scaled new heights of dark, nihilistic poetry on the fifth Seeds album....Sounds like the last record you will ever hear." Mojo (5/01, p.46) - "The whole band was pickled, and the album took 12 months to make. But TENDER PREY still contains at least 3 stone classics - 'The Mercy Seat', 'Deanna', and 'New Morning'..."
