Whatever People Say I Am, Thats What Im Not confirms Sheffields Arctic Monkeys as the UK undergrounds most proselytising young preachers of the DIY gospel. Marrying nervy, caffeine-and-cigarettes indie clatter to conversational, pretence-free lyrics and the occasional burst of off-the-cuff eloquence--"No time for Montagues or Capulets/Just banging tunes and DJ sets", proffers "Dancefloor"--its an instant, pulse-racing hit. No question, the Monkeys are more sinners than saints. The opening "The View From The Afternoon" predicts a ruckus with a whole lot more grit than the Kaisers can muster, while on the mellow "Riot Van", a tale of underage drinking and cop-baiting culminates in a messy beating in the back of a station-wagon. Look beyond the Arctics bristly, laddish exterior, however, because its actually affairs of the heart that comprise this albums secret core: see the sweaty-palmed "Dancing Shoes", bearing testament to the trial of nerves that is pulling in a suburban indie nightclub, or "Mardy Bum"--tribute to a moody girlfriend that, for all its witty barbs ("Ive seen your frown and its like looking down the barrel of a gun"), is tinted with sweet affection.--Louis Pattison

...That?s not whatI call fun
My daughter loves singing and dancing so I saw this DVD for a good price and thought why not? On putting the DVD into the machine, though, my opinion was no longer why now but more why on earth.
TOO MUCH WOW
The write up on the back of the DVD promoted a fun and ?brilliant? DVD from the award winning producers of Fun Song Factory. Well I haven?t seen Fun Song Factory and if it is as good as this DVD then I don?t plan to.
It states that there is a combination of lively dancing, singing and special effect animations though Im still looking. As I put on the DVD Iam struck with how basic it looks compared to DVD?s of today. It looks very low budget with a group of children who don?t seem to know what they are doing half of the time, and I feel bad saying that as they are children. Don?t get me wrong, it isn...

Advantages: Great to relate to, an instant piece of musical history Disadvantages: The songs sound quite samey.
...Britain's latest lyrical genius, Alex Turner really steals the album with his unique style of song writing. Featuring a great deal of wit, annecdotial observation and social commentaries so effectivley crafted it would make Paul Weller proud. So when you think this is a debut album, you won't be suprised that this is instantly compared to the sheer quality and musical force of Oasis' Definatly Maybe. Trebley guitar riffs are perfectly complimented with funky basslines in the vein of The Jam, complimented by relentless drumming which is topped off with lushiously with Alex Turner's Sheffield twangy and nasal voice. It is about time a British band full of energy came along and filled the void through what is a top 40 tracklist full of very bland singer songwriters singing nonesense about the sea (James Blunt, KT Tunstall and the like...

Advantages: Some good tunes, suitable for anyone any age Disadvantages: Also some poor quality tunes, getting worse each time a new ones out
...on the same two disks.
I could say Iam not going to buy the next one but I probably will from impulse buying I can't help myself.
The contents on this album are very varied I'm not sure if that is a good thing as not many people have such a varied in content.
Iam not sure how some of these songs made it to Number 1 in the charts as they seem pretty poor quality to me and there is a lot better songs out there at the time.
Quite a few of the artists are still gaining a name for themselves in this country and were ones I had not heard of un-till purchasing Now 69 I think having their singles on this album is a brilliant way to help become recognised.
So why did I buy it?.....
I bought this album to play in the car mainly for on long journeys I have always bought the Now That's WhatI Call Music albums so I guess I buy them as much out...
