Garden in Franco Zeffirelli's new production of Lucia di Lammermoor and took the world by storm. The following year Joan Sutherland went into the studio to record this reissued tribute to prima donnas of previous generations, illustrating along the way, the bel canto tradition of which she was to become a leading exponent. The 16 excerpts on this digitally remastered double CD include several roles she had already sung or was on the verge of singing, from Gilda in Rigoletto, which she had sung at Covent Garden before her Lucia debut, to Norma. What a performance! The voice is fresh, remarkable in its beauty and she makes it all sound so effortless, tossing off Handel's "Let the bright Seraphim" or the Jewel aria from Gounod's Faust as if they're the easiest things in the world. This sparkling selection of glorious singing demonstrates just why Sutherland was to remain at the top of her profession for the next 30 years and join those to whom she here pays tribute as one of the great singers of all time. --Richard Fawkes

Advantages: Truer To The Historical Legend, Leelee Sobieski Stars, Great Performances, Charlotte Church Vocals, Inexpensive, Captivating Disadvantages: You Might Well Have A Tear In Your Eye By The End, Two Sided Disc, Long Film.
"gripping", "involving".
In comparison to the other Joan Of Arc made for cinema release, "The Messenger" by Luc Besson, starring Milla Jovovich:
Leelee Sobieski plays the part of Joan so much better, an outstanding performance. The story has more substance, belief, historical fact. Choosing between the two as to which one is best was easy. The only thing that makes the Messenger "okay" are the battle scenes. If the battle scenes from the Messenger were put with this "made for TV movie" Or if some of the actors, all of the script from the TV version were put into the Messenger. It would have been a BIG box office hit.
I recommend that you watch The Messenger by video or DVD rental, before buying it, as it could cost you from £9.99p upward. But as this reviewed DVD can be bought for as little as £4.33p, it's well worth buying. (The video ...
Advantages: excellent story, good action, battle Disadvantages: blood
It has a breathtaking story about Joan of Arc - a teenage girl from French village of 1429 who stood before the King with a message from God. She claimed that she would be able to defeat the worlds greatest army and save her country. The film is full of action, battles, blood, emotions, and violence. But it shows the cruelty of 15th century and bravery of unusual village girl who leads the French army to the battle, believe that she may change something but eventually she is betrayed by her own king.
The DVD lasts approx.151mins and starring excellent Mila Janovich, Dustin Hoffman, Faye Dunaway and John Malkovich. It was directed by Luc Besson .
The DVD include 24 minute featurette. It has English and German languages and English, Polish, Czech, Hungarian, Icelandic, Hindi, Hebrew, Dutch, Bulgarian, German, Turkish, Danish, Swedish ...
Advantages: Has the best portrail of Miss Marple ever Disadvantages: No special features
For me Joan Hickson will always be the best 'Miss Marple'. Possibly as she was the first one I saw playing the part. I'm surprised that it took the BBC so long to releace them on DVD
From the acting to the setting to the pacing... everything seems just right. Every part of Joan Hicksons performance (which earned her two BAFTA nominations) was perfect. She plays Miss Marple as the 'rather nosey busy body' who the criminal always seems to dismiss as past it and harmless.
She is seen as the old spinster alway knitting but with her razor sharp brain she can always solve the crimes faster than the inspector. Marple lives in her small village and knows everything that goes on there. Through this she knows the world. She is always saying 's/he reminded me of...'
Unlike Poirot who always had a good relatioship with the Inspector ...
