St Michael & All Angels Hathersage

Advantages: Beautiful & peaceful
Disadvantages: Hilltop position makes it easy to miss

Since the last review a few things have been improved regarding access to the church of St Michael and All Angels, Hathersage. The road up to the church is single track with passing points, but the car park has been enlarged and is well surfaced. Quick access from the car park is up 5 steps, but there is level access from the car park back along the road to the lytch gate (slightly longer but easier for wheelchair users, prams, or people with mobility issues. Currently there are two shallow steps into the church; there are plans to re-lay the flagstones, re-surface the pathway, and provide level access through the main porch. The church is open during daylight hours, offers an historic experience, a well-stocked bookstall (both tourist and Christian), and has a sense of presence and spirituality. Well worth ...

Review of St. Michael and All Angels Church, Hathersage, Derbyshire

The Historic Church of Hathersage, Derbyshire

Advantages: Lots of history
Disadvantages: On a steep hill

The Church of St Michael and All Angels stands high on a hillside above the Derbyshire town of Hathersage. I have passed close by to this Church on many occasions, but it is only very recently that I undertook a small detour off the main road to visit here. All over the County of Derbyshire there are many wonderful Churches and this is one of the finest examples of them all. The Church is thought to date from the 11th century although the first written records of this actual Church are from 1381. This Church is one of the main tourist attractions in the town and it is notable for two different historical reasons. Firstly, the Churchyard here is the location of the grave of Little John, Lieutenant and best friend of the legendary Outlaw Robin Hood. Little John, was in reality a giant of a man and his grave is over 10 feet long (3 ...

Review of St. Michael and All Angels Church, Hathersage, Derbyshire

The Angel of the South

Advantages: Reasonably priced, centrally located, spacious rooms, historical interest
Disadvantages: None

running of The Angel is now overseen by Robert Gough. ****** I hear The Angel has an important part to play in history. Is this true ? ****** The Angel is probably best known because of its mention by Charles Dickens in his famous "Pickwick Papers". Charles Dickens stayed at The Angel himself on two occasions, once in 1859 and again in 1861, to present readings in the nearby Athanaeum. On both occasions he stayed in Room 15, and the four poster bed he wrote of can still be seen in the room today. This short extract from his book has probably done more for the Angel's fame than any other piece written: "The coach rattled through the streets of a handsome town of thriving and cleanly appearance and stopped before a large Inn situated in a wide open street facing the old abbey. "This must be Bury St. Edmunds, and this" said Mr ...
