...and a bit of band history which for fans is awesome, but for folk with just a passing interest may be just slightly enlightening. Ok onto London Calling itself this was the album that really cemented the Clash's reputation as possibly the greatest Rock and roll band ever. It was originally going to be called the Last Testament. As the band said they thought it was going to be the last great Rock and Roll album. The cover of Paul Simenon smashing his bass at the NYC palladium along with the lettering inspired by the first Elvis album was designed to reflect this. The album was produced by the legendary Guy Stevens and his influence on the sound should not be understated. It has a Phil Spector wall of sound type thing going on, this was due to the method of recording where they would record each part twice, which results in a really big sound... Read review

Review of London Calling - Clash (The) by Flash-Hammer

Advantages: The first half
Disadvantages: Most of the second half

...responsible for a lot more of the album's production than he gets any credit for. Stevens was fighting alcoholism at the time, and while there is no doubt his influence was felt on the album, this is the beginning of the shift in power towards Mick. At the end of the day, London Calling is by all means a good album, and is worth owning. But I cant help with sympathise with Nirvana fans who have to put up with Nevermind being the only album from the band that gets attention, despite many of their fans not seeing it as their favourite. London Calling is without a doubt the Clash at the point where they are most accessible to a lot of listeners, without the possibly off putting Anger of the first record, or the slightly overly experimental reggae dub sound of Sandinista!. Beethoven's music as he should have heard it.
Review of Beethoven Symphonies 1-9 - London Classical Players - Sir Roger Norrington by Coloneljohn

Advantages: Outstanding music on period instruments
Disadvantages: Swaping C.D'S in music player.

...The 9 symphonies by Ludwig Van Beethoven. (1770 - 1827) Performed by The London Classical Players. Conducted by Sir Roger Norrington. With the Schutz choir of London. Not everybody likes classical music. Even those who do, do not all like the same things. This boxed set of CD's if different from previous recordings. Firstly, it is played on period instruments. This is not to everybody’s taste. These instruments are not like today’s instruments. For instance, the violin has a cleaner but more plaintive tone. The woodwinds each has a colour and clarity of tone that blends to a harmonious whole. The timpani, those smaller drums, are hit with hard sticks more reminiscent of military drum sounds. The horn section has a different feel to it. Considering the lapse of some 184 years, it would be strange if the sounds produced were... Read review
