follows in the admirable footsteps of their
previous collection, The Abbey' The first thing
that should be pointed out is the slight deception
of this album's title.  The opening track is
Fauré's Cantique de Jean Racine. There follows,
spread throughout the 19 tracks, pieces by
Bruckner, Elgar, Mozart and Brahms, all admirable
composers following, in these musical instances,
the religious tradition laid down by Gregorian
chant but hardly monkish characters of the
mediaeval period. The pieces included, sounding
especially sensuous and dynamic thanks to their
context are all, naturally, beautifully performed,
the recording making the most of the Abbey's lush
acoustic and the softly luxurious tones of the 
Boys' choir. The Gregorian chant fares slightly
less well than in their previous recording, the
mass of voices occasionally getting lost and
smudged in the Abbey's cavernous sonic space, the
stark melodies softened by the more modern sound
of an organ. Despite this, Gregorian Moods is a
fine disc, more of an exploration of the Gregorian
tradition as part of the musical life of
contemporary churches and Abbeys than a venture

Advantages: Intimate, excellent recording of the master of jazz piano alone doing what he does best.

...Thelonious Monk is unquestionably one of the greatest musicians of the last century. Joyous, wild, insane, romantic, ecstatic, otherwordly, desperate, monumental - and that's just his facial expressions. There are musicians who play their instruments, then there are musicians who just play, the instrument and the musician each being and becoming each other's instrument. Monk is one of these, and you won't find a better example of his greatness than on this record. Recorded in just a few days, every track here sounds like it burst out the sticky centre of a donut the size of the galaxy at the beginning of time, imploding with wonderous uncontrollably joy at the very fact of existence. The recordings themselves are so crisp and balanced that you can hear Monk humming and tapping along as he plays the piano with his whole body, somehow... Read review

Classical (half way to) heaven

Advantages: amazing artists, amazing tracks
Disadvantages: Some really weird other tracks

...time to go and put the kettle on. The next choice that I would have left off is the Monks of Silos singing Puer natus est nobis, I know they are good but in all honesty not really my thing. But as number 11 on the CD the kettle has boiled and I can go and make the tea. My main gripe with this CD comes in at number 15 on the 2nd CD. 'All that Jazz' from the musical Chicago. Now even the most novice of classical music critic knows the difference between Classic and Jazz, personally I can not even describe it as Classic Jazz. It follows a waltz from Shostakovich so does not in my opinion fit in with the rest of the pieces on the CD. I don't dislike the piece that much but if I had wanted to listen to Jazz that is what I would have bought. My final critisism of the album is that all the really great, famous stuff is on the first disc most... Read review

...Startlingly original pianist, blending Japanese folk music with early 20th century French impressionism, and oblique yet infectious jazz sensibility echoing Thelonius Monk. She develops her classical composing skills within a jazz context. The music is a rich mixture of classical/traditional Japanese folk and European jazz influences Delicate, beautiful, diverse and inspirational music. This highly talented Japanese pianist is currently promoting original music. An eclectic mix of jazz world music and Japanese folk music.She's at the vanguard of the army of new jazz talent which is adding exciting new sounds to the jazz genre…truly an original and inspired artist who is destined for bigger things. Taeko's band delivers a distinctive sounds, some wonderful backing tracks on this album "space to be" and some great support playing... Read review
