Incidentally at Epiphany, on 6th January - the Festival of the Magi - the front plate of the shrine is removed, displaying, behind a glass screen, the skulls of the Three Kings along with their three gold crowns. My wife is particularly keen that we should plan a return visit to Cologne to coincide with this festival!

The view from the top is spectacular though, and of course you can get a great bird's eye view of the Christmas markets right now in addition to the wider landscape. While it's no mecca for the sport, shopping inCologne is not at all bad. The Galleria Kaufhof is rumoured to be the largest department store in Germany, and takes up a whole block on one corner of the main shopping street. It has a phenomenal chocolate department in the gourmet shop in the basement, and all the other boring stuff too - clothes and handbags and shoes. The chocolate museum naturally has a fantastic shop too, but prices in neither of these are that cheap unless you're buying Lindt which ...

The much more expensive international hotels grouped around the cathedral would have been far busier and noisier, as well as being much more expensive and impossible to park at. We were blessed with superb autumn weather and, in such weather, it is a very pleasant walk along the bank of the Rhine from the Viktoria to the city centre, no more than fifteen minutes away on foot.
The hotel is located in a quiet side street off of the main dual-carriageway that runs along the city side of the river. From our bedroom window we had a through the trees view of the river and the zoological gardens on the opposite bank.
