Peter Serkin's advocacy of contemporary music is heard at its most persuasive in this ... more
program of works written between 1936 and 1992. He opens the program with a gorgeously colored performance of Webern'sPiano Variationsthat captures its gemlike brilliance and sly wit. Serkin's virtuosity makes Wolpe'sToccatashine and enables him to cope with the enormous technical demands of the Messiaen, making musical sense of its incredible complexities. The title piece by Peter Lieberson is a moving tribute to Toru Takemitsu, two of whose delicate works are played with shimmering intensity. The disc ends with a spectacular performance of Wuorinen's subtly complexBagatelle, a work of far greater scope than its name suggests. Highly recommended.--Dan Davis

background articulations - or lack of - from Palmer and Brian.
As we are well into the final half of 'No, Virginia...', it's fair to say that nothing innovative has really happened up till now and 'Pretty In Pink' doesn't really seek to steal the title of the albums most pioneering track. For some reason there is an accordion accompanying the piano and drums with an electro, synth type sound just before the bridge. Again, it's a case of this song being listenable but nothing you'd listen to and consider it to be a stand out moment on the album. Not by a long shot.
Plus the colour pink sucks...I can't condone a song with that in the title...can I?!
'IT'S JUST YOU AND YOUR IMAGINARY FRIENDS' (Lyric from ?The Kill?)
By this point, I would like to state that I have usually given up with 'No, Virginia...' and moved on to another album ...
Advantages: One of the best of the original Brit-punk albums Disadvantages: A very direct set of songs that will certainly offend the humourless
Someone somewhere (I can't remember who or when) once wrote thatNo More Heroes was "the angriest album ever recorded". That was something of an exaggeration, in my view; one or two much more furious albums do spring to mind. 'Contemptuous' seems to me a more appropriate adjective. Yep, 'contemptuous' sounds about right... as do 'filthy' and 'obscene'. All the more surprising then that in the autumn of 1977 this album got to within a hairsbreadth of the top of the UK Album Chart, and stayed there for months. These were clearly strange days.
No More Heroes was the second album released by the Stranglers, a band that came to prominence on the back of 'punk rock', though more by accident than design: the Stranglers weren't really 'punk' so much as just plain 'pissed off', though they managed to express their contempt for everything ...
Advantages: Consistent quality Disadvantages: No big single
"No Limit Top Dogg" is the fourth album by the West Coast rapper, Snoop Dogg. This one is his second to be released whilst signed to Master P's record label, No Limit. This is where the idea for the album's title comes from as he heads this group, which also had Mystikal, C-Murder and Sillk the Shocker signed up too. These all make appearances through this release at some point, just as on "Da Game Is to Be Sold, Not to Be Told".
1. "Dolomite" (Intro)
2. "Buck 'Em" (feat. Sticky Fingaz)
On this one, Tha Top Dogg collaborates with Onyx's Sticky Fingaz, they perform on a bassy, laid-back tune which gets you swaying, and once the lyrics come into effect, this just continues the the way the music has influence on how you are forced to physically react. It is a strong way to get things started on this, his fourth solo album ...
