The Only Musicals Album You'll Ever Need The Only Musicals Album You'll Ever Need
The title of this double album makes an audacious claim, but there are some classic ... more
performances: Ethel Merman ("There's No Business
Like Show Business"), Carol Channing ("Hello,
Dolly"), Zero Mostel ("If I Were A Rich Man") and
Angela Lansbury ("Everything's Coming Up Roses")
are present in all their glory. Even Marilyn
Monroe, who didn't star in a single stage musical,
sneaks in with her quintessential "I Wanna Be
Loved By You" from Some Like It Hot. More recent
talents are represented by Michael Ball ("Love
Changes Everything"), Alan Cumming ("Money"),
Maria Friedman, Ruthie Henshall, Debbie Gravitte
... and the list goes on. Original cast numbers
are supplemented with tracks licensed from TER's
series of complete studio recordings, and solos
from, among others, Cleo Laine and Lesley Garrett.
Even Julie Andrews gets a look in, although sadly
it is only through her voice over for the parrot
in the London production of Doctor Dolittle. Most
of the great, popular shows of the second half of
the 20th century years are represented, and it
would be hard to fault the cast list, even if some
of them are odd choices: why, for example, have
Marti Webb singing the Phantom's aria, "Music of
the Night"? All in all, though, an indulgent
hotchpotch for the easy listener rather than a
selection for musical purists. --Piers Ford

The Only Choral Album You'll Ever Need - The Only Choral Album You'll Ever Need -
The cheesy title may raise a smile and may make you slightly dubious about this two-disc ... more
set. But The Only Choral Album You'll Ever Need is
a combination of fine vintage recordings and
(sometimes) cheeky programming. For example,
Mahler's Symphony No. 8--the ultimate in
late-romantic hyperbole--is followed by the
opening of Monteverdi's Vespers, effectively a
baroque composer's attempt to capture the same
massive grandeur. The juxtaposition is startling
and amusing, but it also provides a fascinating
and unexpected link between Monteverdi and Mahler.
There are some great choirs on offer here, with a
rich variety of styles: the Choir of Trinity
College Cambridge (singing Barber, Fauré,
Allegri, John Tavener and others) is an excellent
mixed-voice ensemble in the Anglican tradition,
while the Bolshoi Chorus and Orchestra (Borodin's
Polovtsian Dances) offers a much throatier sound.
There's Viennese polish (Karajan conducting March
of the Toreadors) and German lustiness (the
Bavarian Radio Choir and Orchestra singing
Mahler). If you're new to choral music you could
do a lot worse than start here. --Warwick Thompson

The Only Piano Album You'll Ever Need - The Only Piano Album You'll Ever Need -
Whoever first dreamt up the title "The Only Piano/Opera/Banjo Album You'll Ever Need" must ... more
have been hoping record buyers wouldn't take it
too literally. A translation would be "We Hope
That When You've Listened To This You'll Want To
Buy Lots More Piano/Opera/Banjo Albums". So as an
attempt to lure listeners into the world of the
piano, how does this set measure up? Most of the
all-time favourite piano pieces are here (though
you won't find Golliwogg's Cakewalk) and childhood
memories may well be stirred by the likes of Für
Elise and Rondo alla Turca. It's not all solo
piano--the orchestra is wheeled on for the Big
Moments from concertos by Grieg, Tchaikovsky,
Beethoven, Mozart and Rachmaninov (who also gets
the famous 18th variation from Rhapsody on a Theme
of Paganini). Among the big-name pianists
represented are Geza Anda, Emanuel Ax, Emil
Gilels, Vladimir Horowitz, Alfredo Perl, Kathryn
Stott and Andrew Wilde. Recordings range in time
from 1955 to 1999. Purists may bridle at the
lollipop nature of the programme, but for those
genuinely looking for an introduction to the
instrument's richly rewarding repertoire, the 150
minutes of music on these two CDs should fit the
bill nicely. --Keith Clarke

Review of Homework - Daft Punk by glasson

Advantages: Full of classics
Disadvantages: Takes a bit of getting used to.

...The album home work from Daft Punk is...... lets face it.... a classic. This is a prime example of french house music. Now this genre isn't for everyone but if you can drag yourself away from the usual commercial rubish and give this album a chance you'll wonder why you ever put up with the commercial stuff in the first place. This album is jam packed with timeless classics such as 'around the world', 'revolution 909'. Why not give it a try. Nice. but remember you need to give it a couple of listenes to before you get used to it.... Read review

The only Stone Roses album you need to buy.
Review of Second Coming - Stone Roses (The) by FATJOGGER

Advantages: By far the best Stone Roses album.
Disadvantages: You will want to splash the cash and buy more stone roses after hearing this.

...This is a must for any self respecting record collection. It is by far the best Stone Roses album available, containing all the cult hits you'll hear pumping out at any indie club. So learn all the words and you'll be singing along with the rest of the slightly aging, but still trying to be trendy fan base. The only down side though is that after hearing this album you will feel the need to splash more cash on further albums. This is definately a classic. A word of warning though. If at any time whilst listening to this album you feel the need to get involved in some air drumming with your eyes closed...stop...think again. It's been done before.... Read review

Review of Metallica [UMD] - Metallica by Hetfield

Advantages: So many styles combined to perfection, will most likely never be beaten
Disadvantages: Sorry, don't apply hear. A timeless classic.

...is incredible and is unquestionably the benchmark for any other metal band releasing a record. From the trashy climax 'The Struggle Within' to the classic ballad 'Nothing Else Matters' you are fixated by the sounds from start to finish. If you only ever buy one more album, make it the Black Album... Read review
