St. Paul's: "The Little Chapel That Stood"

Advantages: Inspiration for humanitarian conduct
Disadvantages: The ongoing pain of loss

Cleveland, Benjamin Harrison, and George Bush (the elder). The chapel's architecture and interior decoration are as historically evocative as its former congregants. Built in the Georgian Classic-Revival style using local stone, St. Paul's resembles a smaller version of St. Martin's-in-the-Field near London's Trafalgar Square--although St. Martin's appears pristinely white whereas St. Paul's is constructed of local mica-schist and brownstone. Pierre L'Enfant, best known for his pioneering city plan for Washington, D.C., designed St. Paul's dramatic alter piece, "Glory," which depicts the tablets of the Ten Commandments at the foot of Mt. WORTH A VISIT

Advantages: See Opinion
Disadvantages: See opinion

St Paul`s Cathedral is one of London`s most awe-inspiring sights. Its dome is the third largest in the world and its graceful bulk is an important feature of the City skyline. The building also manages to communicate a sense of serenity, most notably in the famous of the dome untouched but wreathed in the smoke and flames of the blitz. Wren`s original design for rebuilding St Paul`s was based on High Renaissance ideas, but it was considored too Italiante and too modern ~ the clergy of St Pauls wanted a traditional sanctuary rather than Wren`s Greek cross design.Wren adapted the plans, but kept the dome which gives the cathedral such a wonderfully uplifting atmosphere. On entering the church it is natural to head for the crossing beneath the dome, through whose windows a strangely ambiguous golden light is filtered. In the pavement ...

A SUITABLE RESTING PLACE FOR St ALBAN

Advantages: Antiquity, Architecture, Free Entry, Guides, History.
Disadvantages: None Found

It was one of those rare days that we "happened upon" St Albans and it's Cathedral. Having half a day to kill whilst the car was being serviced in Chiswick, West London, although our loan car, being electrically assisted, was, for now at least, exempt from the Central London Congestion Charge, we made the positive decision to leave "The Smoke" and search out somewhere a touch less claustrophobic. THE ROMAN "CITY" OF ST ALBANS Around twenty miles to the north of London is the delightful old town of St Albans, many years ago I had enjoyed a day out here, Mrs R in her seven years in England had never had the pleasure - but was not, for whatever reason over-excited at the prospect! Asking me 'what was there to see', my first and only real answer was the Cathedral. However, having had a very early start that morning, my thoughts ...
