Southwell (pronounced Suthall) is a picturesque little village in Nottinghamshire, close to the Lincolnshire border. It is famous as the place where the Bramley Apple originated and it is also home to The Workhouse, Britains best preserved example of a Victorian Workhouse, which is now in the care of the National Trust. Southwell's most famous attraction is however it's church.
SouthwellMinster has held Cathedral status since 1884 but the church itself predates that by almost 1,000 years. It is officially known as Cathedral and Parish Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

after the Danish invasion. The relics were placed in an ornate shrine, guarded by canons and became a place of pilgrimage.
In 1092, the church became a Benedictine Monastery when the Earl of Chester, Hugh Lupus (the wolf) wanted to atone for his ways. He invited the Abbott of Bec to travel north from Normandy with his monks. And so, the second church, the Norman Benedictine Abbey of St Werburgh came into being. Parts of the Norman building still survive, the best example being the great arch in the North Transept.
The building of the third church began in 1230 by the monks. The heavy dour Norman architectural church was destroyed and an elegant ornate Gothic Church constructed.

Advantages: magnificent architecture reflecting over a thousand years of history and religion. Disadvantages: none that I can see.
As the King George VI said ?The history of York is the history of England. I don?t know how right he was, but I would like to say the history of York Minster is the history of York indeed.

York Minster is Northern Europe's largest remaining medieval church, also one of the world's great masterpieces in design and construction.
Back in AD 627 York's first Minster was built to christen the Anglo Saxon King, Edwin of Northumbria. It was originally a small wooden church, and then later rebuilt to be a bigger stone one. However it was badly damaged by fire in the year 1069 during the Norman period.
