The Australian Western "The Proposition" is Nick Cave’s saturated abrupt western tale of betrayal, with characters that are, with their brutality make a historical conclusion about English imperialism in past. It seems that Nick Cave, the scriptwriter and music writer of the film comes from the same dark place, if you consider the kind of music he makes with Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds.

The soundtrack is a melancholy masterpiece of mood & menace, atmospheric music as well as film, in a way, usual for Nick Cave. John Hillcoat made film from a screenplay WRITTEN by Nick Cave, an uncompromising movie you cannot turn away from. Soundtrack itself, full of menace, speaks of loyalty and betrayal, it speaks about lack of heart in English settlers in Australia.Yet, if you know Nick Cave’s music, which ranks as ghotic alternative rock, and the soundtrack itself wouldn’t be surprise for you.
FILM Film"The Proposition" Western conflicts the clash between civilizations. Set in Australia, in the late 19th century, the film starts with chaotic gunfire nearby a whorehouse. Then follows brutal scenes, especially brutal scene of Mickey (one of the gang brother) being whipped almost to death in front of righteous Christian bloodthirsty viewers. Entire film, director John Hillcoat fills with heat and dust that might be seen as a biblical motives. There is a contrast here, Stanley's pretty, devoted wife Martha (Emily Watson) blind and deaf when it comes to her husbands’ cruel nature, happily saved by the bell from being raped by bad Irish from the gang. Perhaps more wordy is her perfect rose garden, with a tiny little white picket fence between her house (which represent her world) and ... everything else outside.
Further on, acting crew is superb, as well as the characters and music. One solid piece of work, but only if you like Cave’s music I assume.
