Tie a black rose into your hair

Advantages: It's The Rasmus!, lyrics
Disadvantages: Some tracks aren't very memorable

? 2001 ?Hell of a Collection? 2003 ?Dead Letters? 2005 ?Hide from the Sun? 2008 ?Black Rose? The Music The Rasmus mainly deal with dark songs. They have a gothic feel, and very dark, deep and emotional lyrics. Unlike other Finnish bands that I associate with them (such as HIM) they don?t usually use many other instruments other than guitars, drums and keyboards, but their music is of very high quality, and hauntingly beautiful. Couple this with the lead singer, Ylönen?s, fantastically emotional voice, you?ll really think that the music is speaking to you. The Album Release date: 29th September 2008 Singles released from the album: ?Livin? in a World Without You?, ?Justify? and ?Your Forgiveness?. Highest UK chart position: 13 (in the rock albums chart) The cover art is of a stylised rose. Since their mainstream ?Dead Letters ...

Rings True but Feels Good (The Road Home - Rose Tremain)

Advantages: Convincing, well written, good plot, likeable characters
Disadvantages: Ends suspiciously well

Summary: Ultimately feel-good but by no means simplistic, extremely convincing novel about new-EU immigrants Lev is mourning his wife Marina, dead of leukaemia at the age of 36. After losing his job in the Baryn sawmill, which closed after all the trees had been used up, he sinks into depression while his elderly mother supports him and his 5 year old daughter Maya by making tin jewellery. The money is not enough though and Lev decides to go to Britain, to the lucky land of lucky people who didn't experience the damaging effects of too much history happening in their lifetime. "The Road Home" is a chronicle of Lev's stay in the UK, starting with his 50 hour journey on the coach. We never learn which specific country he comes from (although it's a New-EU country, and almost certainly one that used to be a part of the Soviet ...

Review of The Road Home - Rose Tremain

A rose by any other name couldn't smell this sweet

Advantages: Paved the way for every great guitar band since 1989.
Disadvantages: Slightly muted production, "Don't Stop".

Your initial thought upon finding this review may have been "Why do we need another review on The Stone Roses?" On one level, you might be justified in taking that view. Writing reviews on albums by The Stone Roses, The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin et al will always run the risk of carrying the cache of pointlessness. Those who love bands such as these (or other canonical 'greats') will not need any further eulogies to strengthen their ardour. Those who hate them will never have their minds changed. However, I think it is important that when something is generally considered to be a work of genius that it is highlighted and reappraised down the ages, as a landmark, or a piece of treasure. That is, after all, what led me to this album in the first place. As a country, we have been very lucky to produce some of the finest ...
