Out Of Sight: The Very Best Of James Brown - James Brown

James Brown is, quite simply, one of most influential artists of the last five decades and ... more

any self-respecting music fan should own at least
one collection of his finest moments. Out of
Sight--The Very Best of James Brown is the perfect
introduction. Concentrating on The Godfather of
Soul's heyday, the early 60s to mid-70s, this
18-tracker charts his transition from the molten
knee-scraping balladry of "Please Please Please"
to the ferocious funk and righteous anger of "The
Payback". There isn't a dud track and although the
dramatic ballad "It's A Man's Man's Man's World"
is the equal of anything here, the emphasis is on
rhythm-propelled grooves. It's remarkable that the
combustible likes of "Out of Sight", "I Got You (I
Feel Good)" and "Papa's Got A Brand New Bag"
(Parts 1 and 2) date from as far back as the
mid-60s. With their repetitive rhythms, juddering
bass lines and staccato horn blasts, such tracks
laid the foundations for what we now know as funk.
Arguably, the first fully fledged funk release was
Brown's seminal 1970 release "Get Up (I Feel Like
Being A) Sex Machine". A truly ground-breaking
record, it inspired a new generation to get on the
good foot. Predictably, there are omissions,
notably "Cold Sweat", "Superbad and "Papa Don't
Take No Mess" but anyone new to Soul Brother
Number One will inevitably move on from here and
investigate his extraordinary
back-catalogue.--Chris King

Sex Machine - The Very Best Of James Brown - James Brown

Soul Brother Number One, the Godfather of Soul, the Hardest Working Man in Show Business, ... more

Mr Dynamite--those are pretty arrogant titles, but
not many people would try to put across the notion
that James Brown doesn't deserve them. No other
soul musician in his prime put on a more
exhilarating stage show: as the 1970 set ofSex
Machineattests, Brown was a marvel of athletic,
almost inhuman stamina and split-second timing.
Recorded at the Bell Auditorium in Augusta,
Georgia, this is one of two essential live James
Brown albums--the other isLive At The Apollo,
originally released in 1963. The 15-trackSex
Machinenot only captures the fervour of a
Godfather of Soul's concert in all its glory--the
calculated spontaneity combined with the raw power
of his 20-plus strong band--but it also shows
everyone how a live album should be done. From the
fantastic stop-start version of "Get Up, I Feel
Like A Sex Machine" through the nascent strains of
early rap on "Brother Rap 1 and 11" and beyond,
this gives you a real taste of Brown at his best.
Much of thecredit for the impeccable sound onSex
Machineshould be attributed to his guest musicians
which now reads like the funk-soul Hall of Fame:
the P-Funk Collins brothers, Catfish and Bootsy on
guitar and bass respectively, Bobby Byrd on organ,
Pee Wee Ellis and Maceo Parker on saxophones and
Clyde Stubblefield on drums, among many others,
are a credit to Brown's brilliant leadership,
gospel-impassioned vocals and wonderful songs.

Huh. Ah. Good God. Uh!

Advantages: Timeless REAL soul music
Disadvantages: Only 10 tracks

.../> After 1980's rappers and The Smiths, James Brown is my other musical icon of choice. With a career in entertainment spanning his debut single release, "Please Please Please" in 1956 to his appearance with Will Young at this year's Olympic Torch Concert, only Cliff Richard could boast a career equal in longevity. Cliff, though, can't boast James Brown's critical kudos and influence. Of the 116 albums he's released, this effort - originally ...

WHO IS HE?
-------------------
Even if you don't know any of his music directly, the chances are that you'll have been affected indirectly by his vast 45 year output. For a start, he invented what used to be called "soul", that genre that put feeling and vocal passion before lyrics and image. He was 8 years ahead of Motown and Stax and was experimenting with soulful innovations whilst Chess records ... more

out of sight

Advantages: some all time classics
Disadvantages: a few dud tracks, no live songs

out of sight is a greatest hits collection from the godfather of soul, James Brown. it contains all of the classics that you would expect including 'sex machine', i feel good', 'papas got a brand new bag', 'its a mans mans mans world' and 'get up offa that thing'. there are 18 tracks here in total making this album good value for money. some of the songs dont quite live up to the same high standards as the songs mentioned before, but the song retains a funky groove throughout. perhaps a dissapointing thing is that there are no examples of Brown's legendary live performances here. Browns band is generally very tight. the inlay includes a fairly detailed biography and some good photos of brown in his younger years. overall this is a good album with some genuinely great tracks, there are a few weak links but it doesnt detract from ...

Review of Out Of Sight (The Very Best Of James Brown) - James Brown

the hardest working man in showbusiness

Advantages: too many to mention
Disadvantages: none

Funky President is a collection of the godfather of soul's slightly lesser known compositions. Don't be led into thinking however that there is any compromise on quality. This is an official best of released by Polydor records, none of the cheap rubbish you find in the bargain bin at your local record shop, which sounds like it's been recorded live on a dictaphone. James Brown is not a singer so much as a conductor, backed by an extraordinarily talened group of musicians, the JBs, Brown leads from the front. He not so much sings as directs, for example on funky drummer when he prophesises "Take me into the change" leading up to the break. The breaks themselves are truly awesome, interrupting some funky groove or other like a lightning bolt and introducing a new, usually more laid back riff. The musicianship is quite ...
