Autumnal Thoughts Through Nostalgia
Review of Elgar: Cello Concerto; Sea Pictures by berlioz

Advantages: It is simply one of the finest pieces of music ever written
Disadvantages: How dare you ask of any disadvantges!?!

...Concerto you will ever need to hear, it is the classic 1965 recording of Jaqueline DuPré with John Barbirolli conducting the London Symphony Orchestra that single-handedly brought the concerto back from obscurity. DuPré is a very individualistic performer and her grasp of the concerto is almost outrageously rhapsodic and takes a lot of liberties. But there is an inherent sense of understanding in her playing that nobody has quite managed to achieve ever before or again. Barbirolli's accompaniment is likewise full of fire and the soloist and conductor complement each other to bring about a first class performance that still ranks as the supreme interpretation of this work. This version has been re-released on numerous occasions on EMI Classics and is now also available in EMI's Great Recordings of the Century series, which includes the classic... Read review

the creme de la creme
Review of Me And My Girl - 1985 London Cast by twingkelingstar

Advantages: fantastic vocals
Disadvantages: doesn't have the song "hold my hand" in this recording

Bill Snibson, a Cockney wide boy from Lambeth, is the unlikely chap who inherits the title and fortune of the Harefords of Hampshire. Maria, the Duchess, decides to tum Bill into a worthy gentleman. She also tries to get him to marry Lady Jaqueline, who is very eager for money and the title. Sally doesn't want to ruin Bill's chances and tries to convince Bill that he is too good for her, even though she loves him dearly. Here are the new family values
Review of Various - Family Values '98 by MattyV

Advantages: great intro to some excellent bands
Disadvantages: those easily offended need not apply

...Firstly, don’t be put off by the crap cover design. This is an exceptional collection of live rock music with a hip-hop crossover and an introduction to some bands virtually unheard of in Britain. It includes Rammstein with the power stomping ‘Du Hast’ to a total ‘Korn’ fest. The down points are the Ice Cube tracks which seem rather out of place and is very old Skool like ‘Check Yo Self (Remix)’. The interludes can be a bit annoying after a bit too. The best songs for me are probably Rammstein’s ‘Du Hast’, Korn’s ‘Got the Life’ and ‘Freak on a Leash’, Incubus’s ‘New Skin’ and although not original, a fun version of ‘Faith’ performed by Limp Bizkit and a storming version of ‘Jump Around’. I reckon twelve out of the fifteen songs are excellent... Read review
