The Prodigy are a British electronica (or big beat) band whose style has been heavily influenced by the Acid House Movement. The Prodigy's varying style can best be described as rave or hardcore techno. The band's permanent members are Liam Howlett (composer/keyboard), Keith Flint (vocalist) and Maxim (vocalist). The Prodigy formed in the early 1990s and in 1991 their demo was released by XL Recordings. They have released five albums, including the demo "What Evil Lurks" in 1991, which was followed by "The Prodigy Experience" in 1992 (reached number 12 in the UK charts), "Music for the Jilted Generation" in 1994 (reached number 1 in the UK charts), "The Fat of the Land" in 1994 (reached number 1 in both the UK and the US charts) and finally "Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned" in 2004 (reached number 1 in the UK charts).
The Prodigy have been named by "Q" magazine as one of the "Fifty Bands to See Before You Die" and have produced MTV's "Most Controversial VIdeo" for the "Smack My Bitch Up" music video.
The Prodigy use distorted basslines, distorted and compressed breakbeats and acidic synthesizers to great use producing some of the most influential Electronica music out there.
The Prodigy can sound like Fatboy Slim, The Chemical Brothers and Overseer.
"Their Law" is a great mix of most of the prodigy's best tracks. This is the listing:
1. Firestarter 2. Their Law 3. Breathe 4. Out of Space 5. Smack My Bitch Up 6. Poison 7. Girls 8. Voodoo people 9. Charly 10. No Good 11. Spitfire 12. Jericho 13. Everybody In the Place 14. One Love 15. Hot Ride
This is a great album for Prodigy fans who either don't have many Prodigy albums, or those who don't want to have to keep changing Cds to get to the track they want because most of the Prodigy classics are on this album. It starts out strong with arguably their biggest track, "Firestarter" and doesn't seem to go downhill with a good combination of new and old. They seem to have fit in the better ones off their most recent album aswell, for example, "Hot Ride" and "Spitfire".
How helpful would this review be to a person making a buying decision? Rating guidelines
There's almost more here about the band than there is about the album itself, which I'm not sure is quite the right balance.
