British Sea Power: Open Season
Review of Open Season [Digipak] - British Sea Power by Aufwiedersehen

Advantages: Memorable tunes with comprehensible and meaningful lyrics
Disadvantages: Sonically gorgeous; musically not as clever as some

...The second offering from a now well established British act, Open Season follows up 2003's Decline Of British Sea Power, and only broadens the wealth of talent to be found on the Rough Trade label. Drawing on influences as diverse as Echo & The Bunnymen, Doves and David Bowie, it's a solid album from start to finish. 1. It Ended On An Oily Stage: An upbeat starter, showcasing Yan's versatile voice: from a serene, almost creepy vocal in the chorus, to a more urgent growl immediately afterward. Helped by some virtuosic drumming and a yo-yo-ing guitar riff, this is a sound opener. 2. Be Gone: A catchy riff is doubled by the vocal melody until the chorus, at which point the vocals rise to a ridiculous pitch and the guitars provide an evocative backdrop. The shortest track on the record, but infectious. 3. How Will I Ever Find My Way Home... Read review

'Pete Best - still bitter after all these years'
Review of So Much For The City [DVD Audio] - Thrills (The) by mongo_bongocat

Advantages: Great summer album
Disadvantages: One or two weak tracks

...This was The Thrills first, and in my opinion, best release (last year they released the rather lack-lustre follow up 'Lets Bottle Bohemia'). It was a blast of fresh air at the time it was released in 2003. Full of West Coast of the U.S.A. style pieces (think of a big stew of The Byrds, The Beach Boys, The Doors etc, etc.. i.e. a bit retro, but still managing to sound fresh). The whole album seems to be written about the bands time spent exploring California and the surrounding areas (song titles include 'Santa Cruz (Your Not That Far)', 'Big Sur', and 'Your Love Is Like Las Vegas') and this gives the music it's very laid back, country tinge. Being a band of Irish origin it must have been quite a blast exploring this wonderful part of America. I think from what I read at the time of release, The Thrills had spent many months... Young Dubliners go country rock hippies
Review of So Much For The City - Thrills (The) by JOHNV

Advantages: Unfashionable, good songs
Disadvantages: A touch bland in places

...and the twang of a country banjo foremost in the backing. The latter wears its influences on its sleeve, by copping a reference to "Hey hey, we're the Monkees" in its second verse. And yes, it's definitely cool to revere the Monkees again The other single, 'One Horse Town', is the real standout as far as I’m concerned, an ultra-catchy tune with colourful organ, chimes and jangly guitar that's ever so reminiscent of seminal 60s folk-rock stalwarts the Byrds. If you're not singing the chorus to yourself after a couple of listens, then you probably weren't paying enough attention to it in the first place. As for the rest, more or less in order, it's a likeable if in places slightly bland brew of up-tempo pop numbers and more middle of the road ballads. 'Don't Steal Our Sun' opens with stomping piano and has a kind of Northern soul feel... Read review
