Thickas a Brick - part 1
Thickas a Brick - part 2
Good, that's the track list of this 1972 JethroTull album out of the way! Whilst throughout most of the sixties (and, indeed, even now) albums consisted of 10 or more three minute pop ditties, this album as a (kind of) prog rock masterpiece, has one long song, though with different musical and lyrical themes throughout. But perhaps I am getting ahead of myself.
JethroTull, named after the developer of the seed drill (a bit of random trivia there for you), has morphed and melded through their long history. Very bluesy in their first two albums, Tull was 'accused' of producing a prog rock album with 1971's Aqualung. Ian Anderson, the lead singer, flautist, guitarist, song writer (and, indeed, the only constant member throughout Tull's long lifetime - they are still going now, though ...
Advantages: Fantastic Concept Album Disadvantages: Some People Might Not Get The Joke
This is a excellent concept album whose 45 minutes of continuous music and abstract lyrics were a sociological examination of a childs experience in a modern world context supposedly composed by child prodigy Gerald Bostock . This was an in band joke enhanced by a spoof newspaper included with the albums sleeved and reproduced on the new CD re-mastered edition . This was Tull’s first American number 1 album. This is one of Tull’s funniest albums to date. It was meant to be a bit of satire about the whole idea of grand rock-band concept albums. This humour was displayed more and more in the live shows at this time. ...
Advantages: An impressively accurate and very well made re-issue of a classic retro toy. Disadvantages: The "dilemma" ... should I open and play or keep sealed and display ???
Packaged in a retro style box which has a small window revealing Optimus Prime in "vehicle mode" it is actually quite easy to initially dismiss this toy as nothing special but like the Transformers themselves there's "more than meets the eye" !!!
This is because the box itself holds a treasure trove of 25thAnniversary merchandise and memorabilia including;
* A die-cast replica of the original 1984 Optimus Prime.
* A DVD containing the original animated Transformers mini series.
* A replica copy of the very first Marvel Transformers comic.
* An Autobot Insignia Electronic Voice Box (with speaks classic phrases).
OPTIMUS PRIME "TRANSFORMED"
Whilst the extras contained within the box are great items for fans and collectors it is Optimus Prime himself that is the most impressive.
Initially, he rolls out of the box ...

Album Notes
This edition of THICK AS A BRICK contains a bonus live track and interview. Jethro Tull: Ian Anderson (vocals, guitar, violin, flute, saxophone, trumpet); Martin Barre (guitar, lute); John Evan (piano, organ, harpsichord); Jeffrey Hammond-Hammond (bass); Barriemore Barlow (tympani, percussion). Recorded at Morgan Studios, London, England. While never as high-minded or technically facile as the likes of Yes or ELP, Tull began incorporating complex time changes, sophisticated harmonic structures and highly developed lyrical themes on THICK AS A BRICK, the realization of the artistic growth begun on AQUALUNG. It's here that Tull finally bursts into full-blown prog-rock mode. While AQUALUNG was a group of discrete compositions united by a theme, THICK AS A BRICK consists of one extended piece that occupies the length of the album. Lyrically, Anderson's intentions are a bit more obscure here, but the sophisticated arrangements and virtuosic performances are enough to carry the show. John Evan's piano and organ are at the heart of this complex piece, which moves through an endless succession of tempos, moods and modes in a manner similar to vintage Genesis or the aforementioned Yes, but with a grittier edge. Most importantly, the whole things flows in a cohesive manner. THICK AS A BRICK demands close attention, but rewards the same handsomely.
Album Reviews
Rolling Stone (6/22/72, p.54) - "...their music spins a delicate web of sensitive sounds: sometimes lilting, sometimes soaring to form a brilliant backdrop for the meaningful lyrics and improvisational techniques..."
