You may not be entirely familiar with the name, but if you were one of twelve million people who tuned in to ITV’s massively successful programme “Popstars” in early 2001 or have switched on the radio in the past month, you will definitely have seen and heard from Liberty X. They are the five losing finalists from the group of wannabes that spawned the winning group, Hear’say. With those bunch of losers firmly placed in the “what ever happened to…” bracket of failed stars, Liberty X are the perfect replacements. Only a brave tabloid journalist would brand them “flopstars” now: with a gold-selling number one single (Just A Little) and this top 3 album under their belts, they look set to achieving a longevity that Hear’say were never afforded.
The entire package of this group lets any detractors of the format from which they were formed see that Liberty X know exactly what they’re doing. Their image is sleek and sexy, a far cry from the casual, and on occasion asexual approach of Hear’say, pleasing their (somewhat diminished) army of largely pre-pubescent fans. The black PVC cat suits donned by Kelli, Jessica and Michelle will undoubtedly have been drawn to the attention of the vast majority of the male population, while the two male members Kevin and Tony have set many female hearts a-fluttering. With their vocal abilities scrutinized in front of millions, this is rarely a concern, and the musical approach is fresh and funky. Instead of sticking to a tried, tested and exhausted pure pop formula, Liberty X employ an R’n’B twist on every track to create a sound clearly influenced by classic artists from the 1980s; Chaka Khan, Cameo and early Janet Jackson spring to mind, as well as the undeniable inspiration lent from garage stars like Craig David. Song-writing talent is also showcased in abundance: no less than 9 tracks have been co-written, with Irishman Tony Lundon taking the most credits. Elsewhere, the highly revered and extremely accomplished songwriter and producer Michelle Escoffery is called in to lend her input onto three tracks, as is Pete Devereux of the garage outfit Artful Dodger. The guys and girls, however, know where a huge majority of their fans lie, and so don’t fall into the trap of descending into pretentious drivel intent only on pleasing “serious” listeners. Strong melodies and irresistible hooks abound throughout.
The album gets off to the best possible start with the two-stepping brilliance of the group’s debut single, Thinking It Over. A sultry Spanish guitar rolls effortlessly into a laid back tale of adultery and indecision. When first released in October 2001, it was extremely well received both critically and publicly, with its garage feel gaining Radio 1 support and widespread nods of approval. It duly charged into the UK charts at number 5. The follow up to Thinking It Over, Doin’ It (track 3) was not so universally applauded. It spluttered into the top 15 when released in December last year and the short-lived eye-brow raising seemed to have petered out prematurely. I still regard the track as one of the best on the album; undeniably catchy and continuing the more adult nature both lyrically and musically. The third single, and the ultimate making of the band, lay sixth months down the slippery slope of pop, during which time a lengthy legal battle raged over the use of the name Liberty. It seems that some never-successful group of indie kids had been using the name for years and demanded a name change to avoid confusion. In my view, it is entirely laughable when such nobodies demand such a high profile court case in a patent attempt to increase their own profile. Nevertheless, a simple letter was deemed a worthy addition and Liberty X was born, along with the now legendary raunch-fest that became their third single Just A Little.
It is, simply, one of the best tracks you will hear this year, an R’n’B tinged pop classic which oozes sex appeal from every pore. It duly charged straight to the top of the charts, and is to date the seventh best selling single of the year so far. With three singles coming right at the beginning of the album, the overall quality is bound to decrease thereafter, although the group do an admirable job of keeping the music original and eclectic. Wanting Me Tonight is another tale of lust; silky vocals flowing over an infectious bass line and nagging chorus. Got To Have Your Love will be the next single, and is a cover of the US group Mantronix’s top 5 hit from 1990. I must admit that I had never heard this song before, and I don’t think it’s a particularly famous track, and so it is a good choice of single. It’s nice to see a group steering well clear of classic covers which are only open to immense criticism when it doesn’t sound quite as good as the original. In reality, the track is a summery slice of pop with an intro hugely reminiscent of Michael Jackson’s “Smooth Criminal”, before launching into an up-tempo, feel good track which will undoubtedly be another hit.
With a fear of this op becoming laboriously long-winded, I’ll hereafter look at some of my favourite tracks. No Clouds is quite vacuous lyrically, but is perfect for lying lazily in the garden on a rare sunny day. Look out for the embarrassingly Americanised rapping though! Holding On For You is a rare moment of melancholy on the album, and the only real example of anything resembling a ballad. It’s a tender love song about pining for that loved one who can’t be with you but you wish they would be. All very saccharine really, but quite touching in a school disco kind of way. “Without a doubt you are my rhyme and my reason, and I won’t let you down”. Ahhhhh, bless. Feel the Rush is naggingly catchy with a brilliantly insistent intro that will embed itself into your psyche for hours afterwards. The final track clocks in at a mere 90 seconds. Never Give Up is quite obviously the story of their strength in succeeding through adversity. “We drew the line, used our own minds, chose not to take their advice…Never let them get you down, you’ve got to turn around and find your own way to it…it’s a struggle but be strong and you’ll do it”. It is clear that, unlike Hear’say who seem completely governed by their overbearing management team, Liberty X have been given a much freer reign regarding songwriting, the direction of their musical style, and even in their vocal arrangements.
Overall, I rate this album as an extremely accomplished 60 minutes, even if it does come from a supposedly “throwaway” pop band designed to look pretty and sing catchy little ditties. This lot are clearly more talented than that. They know exactly what they want and how they’re going to achieve it, and at the moment all of the pieces seem to be fitting into place. The subject matter is understandably youthful, covering partying, falling in and out of love and the occasional day in the sun. The songwriting doesn’t come from the Simon and Garfunkel school of metaphor and verbosity, although in this genre the topics seem to fit somehow. The vocals aren’t uniformly sound, with the weaknesses that prevented their place in Hear’say evident in Tony and Michelle’s vocals particularly. Elsewhere, it is clear to me that Kevin and Kelli are wonderful singers who could easily have been chosen in the place of Danny and Suzanne alongside the other Popstars winners. However, it is clear that all members of Liberty X have found themselves in the group they would prefer to be in, singing songs they are pleased with and proud of. Thinking It Over is by no means a masterpiece, but in the current climate of inane manufactured pop bands, these are just about the most polished of the lot.

JUST A LITTLE
This single I think really pushed Liberty X into the limelight, a very catchy song which made a big impact on the charts. Obviously, this song is about wanting a bit more...............
DOIN' IT
Starts off with the guys singing on their own with the girls joining in for the chorus a steady song throughout but certainly not one of the strongest.

Michelle, Kelli, Tony, Jessica and Kevin are the five members of Liberty X. You may have seen them on the first series of Popstars, when Hearsay were picked instead of these guys. Those judges were rubbish, they picked the wrong five but if that hadn’t happened maybe Liberty X wouldn’t be so popular. No wonder ‘nasty’ Nigel wasn’t asked back for pop idol or Popstars the rivals!! The other memorable judge was Nicky Chapman, ... ...you) .
I have got the limited edition of the album, which has a bonus CD. The extra CD is basically loads of mixes of the original tracks, nothing special but it’s free after all.

Michelle got into the final twelve of an all girl group called Girl thing, who then went on to have one hit before disappearing off the face of the earth, apart from one member (also called Michelle) who went on to present for a kids channel.) She ...

...Liberty which is obvious in thinking it over when they sing L to the I to the B to the E to the R to the T Y but because of another group having this name already and making complaints they added the X. I am not sure if the X is for X marks the spot meaning they are the treasure or X as in they have the X factor. Actually now I have read up on this I found out the X was put to the end of the name but was previously in front because they were X Liberty ... ...song, the follow up to Thinking It Over. The video was a bit suggestive a lot of sexual innuendos. A mid tempo song, the singing is good, so is the music. It wasn't as successful as the other songs because it's weak and very different from other songs It is quite relaxed and the title is quite immature. The words are nothing fantastic but I do quite like this song. Vocals are powerful from some members which improves the song a lot. 4.WANTING ME ...

Advantages: Good words/beat Disadvantages: Not Dance tune
I've thought it over and I think that Liberty X have tried their best to make a dance type song which will repeat 'A Little Bit More's' Success. Or have they tried too hard?
Usually when First time singles or second or third singles for a band is a success then they try to do a copy-cat for their second or next single. I'm glad that this is not as bad as I THOUGHT it would be. I have heard it over and over and as usual it's growing on me.
The five ... ...publicity when they came out as liberty and nicknamed 'The Loosers' , But it was even worse when they Went to court after stealing another bands name of Liberty by accident.
And myself I think anyone who came out of being called 'The Loosers' and making themselves into the winners should deserve A Brit Award and I think they might be scooping loads next year and Record Of the Year in December.
So whether you like to listen to music in the car in ...

Advantages: Some good dance tracks Disadvantages: Too many ballads
What do most people think when they hear the name LibertyX? The losers of Popstars probably.
Hear?Say won the first series of the programme, and after releasing a couple of singles, they broke up, amidst huge publicity, so it was left to LibertyX to show that the Popstars series was not a complete waste of time.
The band were originally called Liberty, but had to change their name after losing a lawsuit some time last year, served on behalf of a little known band sporting the same name.
LibertyX released their first single ?ThinkingitOver?, which fared well in the charts, as did their first album, but it was the release of ?Just a Little? that catapaulted the band to stardom. With it?s unforgettable catchy first line ?Sexy, everything about you is so sexy?, and accompanying video featuring the female members dressed in ...
