~~RICHMOND OLYMPIC OVAL~~
The day before we were due to fly back from Canada, we decided to do a dry run to the airport to make sure we knew the route, as it would be the first time we did the route unaccompanied. Mom came with us and she asked if we would take her to see the newly build Richmond Olympic Oval; well you don?t have to ask me twice, I love visiting buildings both new and old ones, but I do prefer the older ones. So after a few hiccups we found ourselves at the Oval.
Richmond BC appears to be the ideal setting for such a sporting facility as the town claims to have the longest life expectancy and the lowest obesity rates in all of Canada, so where else would they launch a new sport and fitness centre, which will also host the speed skating and other events in the 2010 Winter Olympics and the Paralympics games ...
Advantages: Well-crafted songs telling poignant tales; great musicianship; evocative pedal steel Disadvantages: None to speak of

"Post to Wire" is a grown up album and one that is particularly accomplished. While critics have accused the band of incorporating too many styles from song to song, I feel that this isn't the case; there is a country tinge throughout the album but the songs hang together well in spite of the their differences. If anything it shows that RichmondFontaine have plenty to offer and it is the fascinating vignettes created by Vlautin that should be the trademark rather than being confined to musical style. (Their most recent full length album "ThirteenCities" recorded in Arizona with input from their heroes Calexico demonstrates that the band are keen to broaden their musical horizons but the whimsical tales are still there).
Who would like "Post to Wire"? Well, there are the obvious connections to bands like Giant Sand or Uncle Tupelo but ...
Advantages: Realistic, Honest, Great Acting Disadvantages: Explicit/Emotional
'Thirteen' is one of my favourite films, which I watched after a friend recommended it to me. The film begins showing main character Tracy; a well-behaved, thirteen-year-old girl who begins high school and quickly realises that she seems to be "uncool". She quickly becomes envious of popular "bad girl" Evie, whom all the boys love and, as a result, aims to befriend Evie. Tracy slowly begins to catch Evie's eye by changing the way she dresses and trying to impress her. The two are soon inseparable. Tracy, however, is so heavily influenced by Evie's lifestyle and starts getting caught up in a whirlwind of drugs and sex in an attempt to be just like her. The two girls seem like best friends, but as the film progresses, things begin to fall apart, leading to a dramatic climax.
This hard-hitting film is fast-paced and emotional; not really ...

Album Reviews
Uncut (p.83) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "The words are spare, but the sound has expanded....Vlautin has been inspired by his surroundings, and there are at least two classics." Entertainment Weekly (p.68) - "Long journeys, lonely people, and beautiful desert-rock tunes predominate on this quartet's seventh CD." No Depression (p.98) - "[With] cameos by members of Giant Sand and Calexico. They interweave appealing touches, such as mariachi horns and moog organ, giving the album it's color."
