Album Reviews: Mojo (3/00, p.120) - "...an emphatic return to form, a set of delicious ballads...topped off with the declamatory title track. That theme of social unity was topped on YOUNG MODS....A great twofer."
Advantages: The great difference in they styles of each song Disadvantages: The fact that the band would split 3 years later.
...to arms, through to Little Boy Soldiers a mini opera in 3 parts telling of a young boy joining up and fighting in the war to be ship home to him mum in a box with nothing to show except a letter and a medel. Thick as Thieves a story of childhood friendships with the great line 'Thick as Thieves us we'll be together for all time's' still takes me back to my school days and the friends i still keep today, and the great cover of Martha Reeves 'Heat Wave' as song i've never heard covered by anyone better.
So why should you by this album? Well it re-lives a period in which nothing was going right for the country. The Torys we in power, unemployment was on the up and the future looked bleak for the country. It raises my sprits even after all these years, Great sons from a band which at thier peak were unmatched in the world and to me no-one has ever...

Advantages: The Pete Townshend "magnum opus"; the finest production by The Who. Symphonic in its magnitude; superb songs, playing, arrangements Disadvantages: Takes a little concentration and study - but then don't all great works of art?

It is a single work containing seventeen sections, lasting eighty two minutes and spreading over two records (originally vinyl, now CD). It was produced at a time when the technological facilities of the industry were still relatively rudimentary for the demands of the recording.
A LITTLE HISTORY.
It is appropriate to step back for a moment and consider the early history of The Who to put “Quadrophenia” into a semblance of context. It was only eight years before that the group were causing a musical sensation with songs such as “My Generation” and gaining...

Advantages: Bowie at his uncompromising best, seemingly oblivious to all commercial constraints. Disadvantages: The most recent reissue doesn't have the non-LP single from the same era 'Holy Holy' (but then the previous reissue had the wrong version of this song !
...There are far more celebrated albums in the Bowie back catalogue, but this one has probably seen more active service on my record deck/tape deck/CD player than most in the past couple of decades than most.
That being said, this album is not for the faint-hearted.
By 1970, Bowie had hopped on and off of most musical genres, from r n'b to jazz-tinged mod, from Anthony Newley- style whimsy to Dylan-tinged folk-rock. With a new live band, The Hype, Bowie was ready to deliver to the masses a harder-edged sound, perhaps in order to break the lucrative US market, with their current penchant for English heaviness. And 'The Man Who Sold The World' is a VERY heavy album.
Bowie had recently acquired the services of young guitarist Mick Ronson, whose powerful Jeff Beckisms are omnipresent throughout the nine tracks. With producer Tony Visconti...
