Amy MacDonald is that proverbial old head on young shoulders, a Scottish singer-songwriter ... more
who, despite her tender 19 years, writes songs with the grace, wisdom and proficiency of one with a score more on the clock. As influenced by The Libertines as any venerable old folk hand, the eleven songs on This Is the Life combine a traditional, acoustic folk-rock sound with a youthful spirit and self-assured lyrics that veer between the observational and the confessional. "Poison Prince" is a jagged guitar strut dedicated to some Doherty-like bad boy, a song every bit as pathos-laden as The Libertines at their doomed, romantic best with a closing treatise to find "An upbeat song/So we can dance the night away", while "Mr Rock & Roll" begins as a wryly withering jibe at some perennial party animals, but by the chorus, has softened into a subtle, touching tale of human coupling. MacDonalds age doesnt seem to have been an impediment; "Youth of Today", reportedly written when she was 15, is one of the better tracks here, while "Footballers Wife" is a clear-headed attack on vapid Barbie Doll celebrity that suggests this girl is very much on the right track. "Rolling Stone, here I come, watch out everyone/Im singing my song" she sings on "Lets Start a Band". Let that be a warning to you. -Louis Pattison

Andrew put this album onto my Ipod a few months ago and I haven't stopped listening to it since.
Amy has such a rich tone to her voice that when she is singing I don't feel like she is intruding my personal space. She is great to have on in the background when we have guests around because her voice is easy to listen to but also has the depth and power to be able to stand out and be talked about.

The album has a very irish feel to it and when I first listened to it I was sure that she had been influenced by The Cranberries in one way or another. With the seriousness of the lyrics and the vastness of the instruments, I felt like I had been whisked back to the 1990's when I first started listening to them.
My favourite song of the whole album has to be 'Youth of today'. My interpretation of the song is that she is basically saying to someone she knows that you don't deserve the respect you athink you do so stop complaining about how things were because this is how it is today. If you don't like it then tough. The song is written extremely well and made me think of the older generation moaning about how things aren't as they were. I think sometimes people need to be told to basically 'get over it and stop moaning about what once was' and that is exactly what Amy does.
The album as a whole is very strong and although it is easy to listen to in one sense, it's also very thought provoking and intense in another. I was moved by some of the lyrics and spent a lot of time listening deeply to what she had to say.
This album comes highly recommended by me especially if you like singers with deep and rich tones who have a lot to say!
