I live in the next village to where Bring Me The Horizon hail from. Well, Oli Sykes anyway. And there was a huge eruption of pubescent angst around the time they got famous. I mean, there was a lot of kids that identified with their music, not just 'scene' kids or emos. 'Who Wants Flowers When You're Dead? Nobody' is the best track on there. Its absolutely explosive. It encapsulates everything it means to be part of something fresh and subversive and shameless. Oli growls sexily the words of not a brutal metalhead but of a forlorn poet, without reaching the cliched blatant emo cringeworthiness.
'Our hands in prayer formation, Our elbows on the bed, One last try for Heaven, Thinking who wants flowers when you're dead?'
Remember when there was a beautifully challenging epidemic of grunge artists and fans, creating music to blast out to drown out the sound of parents screaming, teacher's preaching and girls bitching? Remember Kurt Cobain and the massive impact he had on kids' lives, telling them to hold on and that the world is f****d up but its okay because you can do amazing things if you try? Oli Sykes is the heavier, nastier, tattooed version of Kurt.
Try this one on for size, if you think you're hard enough.
