A little bit of background to this classic Michael Jackson album:
In 1982, Jackson released his second Epic album, "Thriller", which became the best-selling album in music history with more than 60 million copies sold worldwide. The album spawned seven hit singles, including "Billie Jean", which was the first music video by an black artist to receive regular airplay on MTV. "Thriller" spent 37 weeks at number one and remained on the Billboard album chart for 122 weeks. It was eventually certified 26x Platinum in the United States and is still the biggest selling album of all time...and guess what, I am not surprised!
Here is a rundown of each track and why it appeals to me;
"Wanna Be Startin' Somethin" - Fast paced, beat orientated, simple and funky. It is it's simple yet outlandish and original rythm along with Michael's vocals on the song which make it a huge hit for me on the album.
"Baby Be Mine" - Although it is probably the song i listen to the least in the huge amount of time i dedicate to listening
to and watching Michael Jackson songs, the song is not bad at all, its nice and smooth, R'n'B orientated with a nice 80's feel to it.
"The Girl Is Mine" - Such a smooth classic, very laid back, funny in parts with a stand off between Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson. Although i am not a fan of McCartney his vocal add another dimension to the song.
"Beat It" - Probably one of Michael Jackson's most well known songs, with a very rocky feel to it. The video does it for me, beautiful choreography. The song is very catchy and you can't help but dance your ass of to it!
"Billie Jean" - What can i say? The best song ever made, enough said. (Watch as many performances of this song on youtube.com, the dancing will blow your mind)
"Human Nature" - The most original song on the album, minus "Billie Jean", its smooth and the funky vibes picked up throughout are divine. I love to listen to this song when on the road and out and about, its very soothing.
"P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)" - In my opinion a very underrated song, its funky and smooth with many differernt vibes, with a funk guitar and synthesizer heard at points. Very catchy also.
"The Lady in My Life" - It's a slushy and slow song which shows Michael Jackson's voice in a new light. Very beautiful lyrics and vibes and levels in his tone of voice and song make the song very enjoyable and emotional.
During the 80's music did become very samey, with new techno beats emerging and simple electro tones overcrowding the musical business. "Thriller" has a very original approach to music not only during the era but even today the songs stand out to be very different to what is produced. The timeless classic "Billie Jean" is voted to be the greatest song of all time and i agree, its simple beat, groovy low bassline with Michael's vocals are a recipe for amazment.
The lyrics on the album are very new and original themselves. Rather than having every song talking about a woman or love, Michael add's a new dimension of musical genious with songs such as "Thriller" and "Beat it" which are totally different to any other song during the early 80's.
The mix of songs although there are only 9 are mixed well and are diverse in style. From funky beats such as in "Billie Jean" to smoother vibes such as "PYT" there is something for every musical taste within such a "small" album.
It is voted to be Michael Jackson's best album and the world's best album, with figures surpassing records everyday. I myself prefer the album "Bad" but i still believe this to be the most groundbreaking album ever made in terms of being influencial within the music industry.
The competition to this album were probably at the time, "Lionel Ritche" and "Prince" who's music i also enjoy, but they will never have the finesse or performance standards as the legend that we call Michael Jackson.
Although, not that important but still a part of the album, the cover is great with Michael flaunting himself looking his best. It was the Michael that got everyone enthralled with his music and dance. Also comes with a lyric booklet which i don't need because i know them all and nice artwork of Michael back in the early 80's.
Please get the shrapnel out of your pocket and instead of spending it on alcohol, sweets and sex, buy this album, its better than all of those. I can guarantee it will change your opinion of Michael Jackson.
I recommend buying it from play.com as they do a double album of both "Off the Wall/Thriller" michael's 1st two solo albums on "Epic" for the inexperienced wary Michael Jackson fan.
I give this album 10/10, more if i could. I hoe his new album in 2007 will reflect his genious portrayed in this album and all the others he has created.
