Advantages: The best of British rock Disadvantages: Maybe a little cliched
...they announced they were splitting, so I can’t really talk. But that is still a great effort compared to some of today’s bands, such as Limp Bizkit, who not only use the F-word 46 times in a single song, but also boast about it in the lyrics. Not everyone likes swear words in their music, and Thunder are one of very few rock bands around that ever realised this.
Every band has a crowning glory. This is Thunder’s. Put this on, follow the engineer’s recommendation to play it “very, Very, VERY LOUD” and for eleven songs and 50 minutes, you will be transported to the place where great rock bands are born. The album is, to my mind, the best music ever to come out of South London, the best rock music ever to come out of the UK, and the best album to ever come out! I LOVE this album…had you noticed?

Advantages: Thunder's most mature album, lyrically and musically Disadvantages: The 4 year gap before the next one
...” don’t really tell you anything about what’s on the CD, but are great for summing up the band. Information like finding out that only 35 people attended their first gig in Southend in July 1989 and that “The Thrill of it All” would have been released in late 1996 instead of 1997 if Ben hadn’t had tendonitis and been barred from playing his guitar are things you never knew before, but somehow add so much to the love of the band. There were hard times, but they kept going, and they kept getting stronger.
As entertaining as the booklet is, it’s the music that people loved Thunder for, and there’s plenty of that. There’s nothing as wild and raucous as “Dirty Love”, nothing as laugh out loud funny as “Stand Up”, but there’s also nothing as contrary to the usual Thunder sound as “Moth to the Flame”, or as poorly executed as “River of Pain...

Advantages: Some songs as good as anything Thunder have ever done Disadvantages: Not available really cheaply, yet.

A gentle opening soon gives way into a stomping mid-tempo rock track with a blues undertone, which has very much been a Thunder trademark over the last two decades, although this does perhaps have more of a nod towards blues-rock than the rock-pop sound fans might be used to; maybe edging towards the more blues influenced sound of Luke Morley’s solo album, “El Gringo Retro”.
“Dirty Dream” is perhaps a little closer towards the Thunder sound, being a little more up-tempo and a little more towards the pop-rock side of things. Lyrically, this has a nod towards Whitesnake but the song is unmistakably Thunder, especially with Danny’s distinctive vocal over the top. This is one of my favourites from the album and will prove to any Thunder fan that the band hasn...
