Luciano Pavarotti 1935 - 2007 I am not a particularly sentimental person and I certainly have no respect for the cult of celebrity, but I will not deny that I shed a small tear of sadness this morning when I heard the news that Pavarotti had lost his battle against cancer. I am sure that over the course of the next few days we will be overdosed with phrases like 'larger than life', 'enormous talent' and any others that our overpaid tabloid editors can come up with to link his incredible talent with the size of his waistline. The Essential Pavarotti

Advantages: Great operatic album
Disadvantages: none

This is in my opinion one of Luciano Pavarotti's greatest albums ever! The great tenor at his best singing classics such as O Sole Mio, Nessun Dorma, La Danza, Vesti la guibba, Rigoletto la Donna é mobile and many more. This album is truely astonishing from argueably the greatest tenor that ever lived. The passion in the songs that Pavarotti sings in this album are amazing, it will sweep you off your feet and throw you into complete perfection. Unfortunately as you may have heard Luciano Pavarotti died on September 6th 2007 which makes this album a tribute to the great tenor and his life long work as an operatic legend. Luciano Pavarotti was one of the most renowned people wordwide and this album presents some of his best work and you should buy this amazing album in honour of the greatest operatic legend that ever lived! ...

Review of Essential Pavarotti

A selection of Pavarotti's great recordings

Advantages: Pavarotti at his best in core repertoire in clear beautiful sound
Disadvantages: 'Pavarotti's Greatest Hits' is only a few pounds more for 2cds

This is one of the better introductions you could have to Pavarotti. This selection is good because all of them come from the middle region of his career (the pop songs are a little later but as they are not full out opera pieces this is not a problem) it also has earlier composers such as Donizetti and Rossini as well as later greats such as Bizet (not a big figure in Pavarotti's career but beautifully sung) and Puccini with Nessun Dorma taking pride of place. The inclusion of Italian songs is good fun and very well sung, listen to the high notes in the mattinata, but there are not any of Pavarotti's collaborations with celebrities like Sinatra etc which for me is a major plus but to others may be a bit of a let down depending how much you enjoy his 'pop' music output.
