selling a quarter of a million copies? For Maine's Ray LaMontagne, it's all about shaking up the formula, evading repetition and delivering the unexpected.Till the Sun Turns Blackfinds the introspective singer/songwriter complementing his folk-country ways with traces of strings and horns and spooky soulful background voices. Songs like "You Can Bring Me Flowers" and "Three More Days" are the most R&B-influenced, the latter shuffling about ala The Band or Tony Joe White. Despite its brooding lyrics, "Empty" has a rollicking, almost breezy delivery, a perfect balance to either the hushed title track, the unnerving "Be Here Now" or the horn-fortified waltz, "Gone Away From Me." Throughout the 11-song sequence, and especially on the final song "Within You," LaMontagne's voice remains the record's most crucial element, as vibrant as it is tattered and as harsh as it is flawless.--Scott Holter

Advantages: Slow, soft and melodic.Really different to Trouble.Sincere in feeling, content&deliverance. Disadvantages: If you are looking for something R&B,folk-country sounding like Trouble then this is different.

Most of the songs use a very gentle ensemble of string instruments which gives it the delicate and airy feel that isn't present in Trouble. And his voice too is a bit different in this album. I loved his warm gravelly tones in Trouble and they are still just as lovely in this album, but they are...softer, I think is the best word to use and definitely more subtle.
Lyrically this album is really charming too, although less lyrically reliant than Trouble. Some of the songs still have a ballady, oldy worldy, southern feel like those in Trouble. A great example of this is the song 'Empty', with brilliant evocative and poetic lyrics like 'these cut throat rusty sunsets'. The lyrics also achieve a great poise and grace, loaded with romantic and melancholy tension.
This is a truly unique album which puts him in a catagory all of his own (which is a good thing).
Summary: Brilliant album, different to Trouble but still as amazing.Totally unique,in a league all of his own
Advantages: One of the most beautiful voices around Disadvantages: none
I first heard Ray on Later with Jools Holland, playing 'You can bring me flowers'. i was mesmerised and decided i had to look into him more. i found this album and stuck it on my cd player. after one full listen through i couldnt believe what i had heard. one of the most beautiful, soulful albums i had listened to in a long time. the raspy, deep quality of his voice and the subtle, fragile nature of his songs was breath taking and heart wrenching. ... ...the subtleties more and more, the first 10 seconds of the album, an almost silence before the gentle guitar picking comes in is one of my favourite moments. from then on the album builds, then drops and builds in a wave of emotion. Be Here Now is so powerful yet gentle, Three more Days is more upbeat and the qualities of his voice are realised in another way, more powerful. Where 'Till the sun turns Black' returns to this deep, brooding, darkness ...

Advantages: well written, wonderfully produced and perfectly sung, great to chill out to. Disadvantages: Only 11 songs
Background
After such a beautiful debut; ‘Trouble’ I was hopeful as to the outcome of Ray LaMontagne’s second album ‘Till the Sun Turns Black’. It seems my hope wasn’t misplaced and after listening to the album (continuously) for a week I wholeheartedly believe that this album is just as good as the first. It seems that LaMontagne has branched off in many different directions from ‘Trouble’ to produce an array of tracks that individually seem very ... ...familiar sound. Notable Tracks
The unhurried acoustic guitar combined with the whispered vocals and smooth strings in ‘Can I Stay’ is relaxing and romantic - I have listened to the track over and over. I equally enjoy the eighth track ‘Lesson Learned’ with its aggressive beginning and interesting and intelligent lyrics. Other highlights include ‘You can bring me flowers’ and the charmingly agrestic ‘Empty’.

Album Notes
Ray LaMontagne's second release on RCA, 2006's TILL THE SUN TURNS BLACK, follows many of the cues of his superb debut TROUBLE. He is still a consummate student of classic singer-songwriter rock in the vein of Neil Young, and as in some of Young's most heartfelt work, cinematic string flourishes swell behind introspective lyrics and the thrust of a beautifully understated voice. "Never learned to count my blessings, I choose instead to dwell in my disasters" La Montagne sings on "Empty," and his near whisper invites the listener to do the same. "You Can Bring Me Flowers" rewrites the Stones' classic "Dead Flowers" from the perspective of the jilted lover and "Three More Days" echoes the blue-eyed husky funk of Joe Cocker. LaMontagne is certainly a classicist, but his deft chops reinvigorate the familiar with a flair all the singer's own.
