Time After Time – a song familiar to most people, by Cyndi Lauper. This was always a beautiful song, but Eva sings it so simply it just has more power that way, somehow.
Woodstock – I am fan of Joni Mitchell, but I prefer this version of Joni’s song.

I had already bought Eva’s CD ‘Songbird’ and written a review of it here on Ciao. I loved it so much that I decided I would try to get hold of everything that Eva Cassidy had recorded while she was alive. Most of you by now will know that Eva died in 1996 at the age of 33. And it is only now that she has received the kind of recognition that her talent deserves. Apparently she was very shy and not at all ambitious. She had been offered various recording contracts, but chose just to sing for pleasure rather than for monetary gain or fame.
I found it very hard to decide which CD to purchase next after ‘Songbird’. The ‘Songbird’ CD is made up of tracks from the other CD’s of Eva’s (but not from ‘Time After Time’) so I decided on this one, to hear as many different songs from Eva as possible. I hope that my ops will also help you decide in which order to buy the CD’s, as I am sure you will want to buy at least one, if only out of curiosity! I truly believe there is room in everyone’s CD collection for some of Eva’s music – if it not your sort of thing then maybe just as an easily listening CD for romantic evenings or dinner parties.
I personally appreciate this CD more than ‘Songbird’; it has more of a folk feel to it, with some blues sounds too. Somehow I feel that Eva’s voice comes through even better on these tracks. The soul that she brings to her singing is very rare and it can touch you very deeply. She also has great taste in music! She has chosen some great songs to give her own personal treatment.

I find it very hard to pick ‘stand-out’ tracks, as I really love everything that is on the CD. I guess if I were pushed to I would single out:
Ain’t No Sunshine – the great Bill Wither’s song, I love Eva’s treatment of this, so cool! Time After Time – a song familiar to most people, by Cyndi Lauper. This was always a beautiful song, but Eva sings it so simply it just has more power that way, somehow. Woodstock – I am fan of Joni Mitchell, but I prefer this version of Joni’s song.
The last track on the CD ‘Way Beyond The Blue’, is the one jarring note here. Good track, but it doesn’t gel with the rest of them. I personally would have left it at Woodstock, a very gentle way to end the album. But Way Beyond The Blue comes in and changes the mood totally. That was probably the intention, but I don’t think it works. If you can programme your d player to play tracks in another order, skip that one off the end and maybe place it between tracks 8 and 9.
Advantages: an angels voice, good gospel and jazzy thread to the songs, good feel, emotionful music Disadvantages: not enough songs would be my only complaint
it on his radio show one day. Strong vocals with gentle acoustics give this song more emotion than any other musician I have known to do this song, and it will leave you with a profound sense of peace.
There are no words that can suitably put how much I love this album. Although it is an anthology of songs from her other albums, I will be collecting her other albums. They are: Eva By Heart, which was also released post-humously; Live At Blues Alley and The Other Side, a duet album with Chuck Brown. I recommend you try to listen to this CD at least once. Definitely recommended.
Also I found on Amazon a CD called TimeAfterTime by EvaCassidy. ...

Album Notes
Eva Cassidy Band: Eva Cassidy (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars); Keith Grimes (electric guitar); Lenny Williams (piano); Chris Biondo (bass); Raice McLeod (drums). Additional personnel: Roger Henderson, Andrew Hernandez, Alan Day, Steve Digman (guitar); Dan Cassidy (violin); Joanne Opegnorth, Uri Wassertzug, Mark Evans, Carole Evans, Edgardo Malaga Jr (strings); Michael Finnigan (Hammond B-3 organ); Jimmy Haslip (bass). Producers: Chris Biondo, Lenny Williams, Steve Digman, Bill Straw, Roger Henderson. Engineers: Chris Biondo, Ned Judy. Principally recorded at The Maryland Inn, Annapolis, Maryland. Includes liner notes by Kevin Howlett. As is so often the case, the talents of singer Eva Cassidy did note come to public attention until after her death. Cassidy died at a mere 33 years of age in 1996, and up until then she'd only been known in the local music scene of Washington D.C. Subsequently, a word-of-mouth groundswell earned her posthumous popularity in England, which then wafted back over to the U.S. TIME AFTER TIME is a good introduction to Cassidy's work. More an interpreter than a writer, Cassidy completely inhabits everything from Simon & Garfunkel's folky ballad "Kathy's Song" to Joni Mitchell's hippie anthem "Woodstock" and Bill Withers's brooding R&B classic "Ain't No Sunshine." Throughout the album, her singing is consistently both strong and reserved, betraying emotion without resorting to showy indulgence. An apt comparison might be an updated, American Sandy Denny, with whom Cassidy shares a special kind of quiet soul.
Album Reviews
Rolling Stone (8/30/01, p.125) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...She effortlessly shuffles styles and the song selections are astute...Cassidy comes across as a bluesier version of English folk singer Sandy Denny....she melts her personality into the fabric of each melody..." Q (9/00, p.121) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...Her towering voice, capable of handling Paul Simon's 'Kathy's Song' with fragile dignity, belting out 'Easy Street Dream', and freshening up standards such as 'The Letter' and 'Ain't No Sunshine'..." Mojo (8/00, p.102) - "...Anybody who loves to really sing would give an arm and a leg to come close to recording an album like this one."
