Album Notes: Aside from being one of the greatest jazz drummers of all time, the late Buddy Rich was (and remains) one of the jazz world's more colorful personalities. Rich had both tremendous technique and attitude to spare. TIME OUT is a collection of live recordings drawn from the extensive tape archive of Rich's alto saxophonist Alan Gouvan. Over 15 years of recordings are coming out a little at a time, and fans of Rich and modern (that is, post-1960) big band are all the richer for it. While TIME OUT might not have the consistency of an album recorded at a single session or location, it remains an exciting addition to Rich's legacy. High-energy yet precise drumming, dynamic ensemble arrangements, and general joie de vive are the chief selling points here.
Advantages: Makes you realise just how cool Blues can be Disadvantages: The sound quality though not bad might put some people used to 'polish' off
...I always forget just how much I like Blues until I start listening to it again, though it can be hard to find it really pure and passionate these days. I have a couple of other Buddy Guy albums; one early on, his recordings for Chess Records, where he was a session player and though his desire to do so, was never allowed to cut loose (a mistake the head, Marshall Chess, recognised late on in the sixties when the likes of Hendrix, Clapton et al were crashing to stardom). The other, Damn Right I Got The Blues, from the nineties never quite cuts it. So what a pleasure it was to stumble upon Live At The Checkerboard Lounge.
Live At The Checkerboard Lounge is not quite a purist album but it's pretty close. Buddy Guy was approached by JSP Records, then with virtually no catalogue to produce a live album, as Guy at the time could...

...to get on in life and have fun and party but not everyone feels the same as him and he gets a hard time because of his view.
This song is just so much fun. It's very catchy especially at the end because when you think the song is over; Big 'n' Rich do a ditty and rope everyone in to singing a nonsense song about bedroom music and being Superman...very funny.
Six Foot Town
-------------------
This track is about someone who's feeling stiffled by the town he's living in and that he knows better than everyone else around him and that when he hits 21 everyone had better watch out.
This is a great coming of age song. You've probably been there, I know I have, people just seem to be getting in the way or butting in on your life and all you want to do is fight and push them back....very catchy tune.
Holy Water...

Advantages: For any Buddy Holly Fan Disadvantages: None unless you do not like Buddy Holly
...Apart from this CD being from one of the greatest 50's performers of all time who tragically past on way before his time along with other stars whoose talents like Buddy's were not at that time totally released as had he had the chance then record sales would have boomed.
He was a household name and to many even in 2005 remains one of the most reknown artists of this genre of music.
When you listen to this CD it makes you think back to the era when playing your guitar in a friends garage was what it was all about and you can picture when you close your eyes being there accross the road watching and listening to the raw beat and riffs(guitar solos) as they were performed with out any enhancing like you get with todays music.
This CD has his most well known hits and songs on and is perfect for those relaxing evenings at home...
