Charlotte Church has always been known as the 'voice of an angel', now as Catherine Tate's 'Grandma' has described her perfectly as 'liver of a wino'. She was the sweet little child that every Gran, and Mum loved for her operatic vocals and childlike sweetness.
In 2005 she grew up! Not only did her life become tabloid heaven after her gaining her millions, but she got the kiss and tell ruffian boyfriends, drank a lot, smoked a lot more, got a rugby player boyfriend and drank some more. And god have we loved her for it! In all this time she has made her debut 'pop' album Tissues & Issues and this is what I think…

"I like the sound of your hand slapping, your whip cracking, this could be painful'. It's a short 2.54 minutes of pure camp sexy sleazy motown pop and its genius. It matches the voluptuous mix image she has created. An excellent opener. 6/5
Debut single 'Crazy Chick' follows on. It's a real upbeat motown piece that a lot of pop princesses would kill for. ' I go ballistic yeah your making me a crazy chick' it's a real feel good song which showed how Charlotte could go from opera to pop. Girls Aloud have claimed that Charlotte's nicked their sound but I don't think this sounds anything like. It's just radio friendly and catchy and I don't think only Girls Aloud have the demographic on that! 5/5
'Moodswings (To Come At Me Like That)' is due for release in a few weeks and a lot of reviews stated this was the best track on the album. I think its awesome but I would have chosen a different song for the next release. It's got a real piano plinky plonkyness and still has her 'motown for the naughties' sound. Opening line 'now first of all I wanna let you know that, I've known for some minor moodswings now and then' expresses the song. It was actually written specifically for her, and she wasn't offended - she loved it. It's all about her struggles with the papers and things from an outsiders view, very clever! 5/5
Now if there is a slight similar sound to any Charlotte Church song its on 'Show A Little Faith' its like a good mid-tempo Sugababes ballad. Very radio friendly but not middle of the road. I love the lyric ' now do you believe in miracles, I believe they happen everyday.' The chorus is just about faith in humankind 'everybody sometimes feels the need to be alone, it's a temporary break down when there's nothing left to say, show a little faith, everything will be ok'. 5/5
Charlotte wrote 'Finding My Own Way' with Marcella Detroit (of Shakespeare's Sister fame) to her mum. 'I'm just finding my own way, in my own sweet time, and if I making a mistake, well at least its mine, if I travel down a different road, to the one that you would take, I'm just finding my own way'. I think it's quite self-explanatory. Again it's a big vocal belter but has a strong guitar and piano led beat and its very uplifting. 5/5
Co-writing with Guy Chambers makes a massive anthem in 'Let's Be Alone' one of my favourite tracks on the whole album. It has a hard electro feel while Charlotte hits some opera notes and also chants in the background. It's a very dark sexy track, vocally it is an interesting song as there is the operatic parts in the background yet its her most growling, gritty vocals. This would be huge in clubs and the radio and I would have made this the next single. "Nothing can come between us, now that the seeds been sewn, why can't anyone leave us to be alone? Why are they coming to save us, like trying to get blood from a stone, why does the world have to hate us? Let's be alone'. There's even whispered naughty talky bits, a stand out track. 7/5
Ok now I hate to say it but Marcella helped make a cracker with 'Finding My Own Way' however… 'Easy To Forget' is just that. Dull, predictable and exceptionally easy to forget. A dud. The only filler, was also the b-side to 'Crazy Chick' 1/5!
Bluesy, jazzy and very deep vocally, you can imagine Charlotte writhing on a piano in a jazz bar singing 'Fool No More'. The vocals on this song actually make my hairs stand on end its stunning "You cant fool my heart anymore, so now I'm walking down out the door, you've taken my soul, now let go, I'm not that fool I was before, I'm not your fool no more." It's not exactly single material but you'll have it on repeat… do you know what I mean. It's a really good break up rage song! 5/5
Another song another name Gary Barlow co-writes 'Easy Way Out' along with Elliott Kennedy who used to write all the Spice Girls stuff. It's more of an epic than the other ballads on the album. Her vocals like the backing piano's and orchestra are very emotional. "He's given you nothing, but taken it all, you're taking the easy way out, I'll say it again like I've said it before, stop taking the easy way out" the violins are as desperate as the vocals its stunning. 5/5
Guy Chambers shows his skill at writing again on 'Casualty Of Love' the first verse and chorus are just Charlotte and a Spanish guitar, he also uses her note operatic range. The song then suddenly changes to a Latino upbeat slightly camp affair but yet keeping Charlotte singing a ballad. It's a very cleverly constructed song. "Oh, oh what I didn't know, I never loved him so, what was real? And oh, he was a drug to me, but he's the casualty of love." You get an autobiographical tone to in Charlotte's co-writing 'Mamma was right there was no love in my mind, just an obsession what a waste of my time." Stunning. 6/5
"Even God" opens with sweeping strings and instantly your hooked. The third single from 'Tissues & Issues' didn't fair as well in the charts as the previous two but I think its because it's a 'grower' (I hate that term) but it's a very gently hypnotic song. "Even God can't change the past no matter how many tears I've cried, yes I thought this love would last, who am I to question why, who am I?" I think this song is sublime which is ironic as it's originally a Boy George and Culture Club song, and I don't like them at all. Another stunner! 5/5
For the closing song Charlotte sings again with just a guitar. It's a very clever song, again written with Guy Chambers. 'Confessional Song' was done by Charlotte just singing about what she did during the day before she saw Guy each recording session, then they added a chorus and Bob's your uncle. Well mines called Matt actually. After chorus one "this is not a confessional song, I'm just singing to myself, my situation didn't leave me strong, everybody needs a little help" the orchestra and more heavy guitars kick in. I love the fact the song doesn't rhyme, I also love the lyric "I was born a catholic (poor old Father Delaney), now I'm on a guilt trip, that I try to suppress". A fab ending to a fab album especially the chirpy 'do, do, do ,do de duh's'. 5/5
Overall this is a must have album from 2005. I simply cannot urge you enough to buy it. I also can't wait for her second effort.
P.S Has anyone noticed that even though it's called 'Tissues & Issues' the side of the album calls it 'Carzy Chick'? Or am I just a bit sad?
Advantages: A few fairly decent pop songs Disadvantages: A few not so decent pop songs
I'm quite possibly the kind of person that Charlotte Church was aiming at when she decided to take a change of direction into pop music. I would never even have considered buying her "Voice of an Angel" style CDs, purely because classical and operatic style music isn't my thing. I do, however, have a liking for well crafted pop music, so I'd always be likely to give her pop debut a chance, if it seemed worth it.
Church certainly seemed to have all ... ...After all, she had the sports star boyfriend like Posh Spice and Cheryl from Girls Aloud. She had been pictured falling out of nightclubs like the Gallagher brothers of Oasis. And she has an ex-boyfriend selling all her secrets to the tabloids like…well, just about everybody, really.
Of course, living the life of a pop star doesn't mean you'll be any good at actually being one, as the winners of "Fame Academy" will be able to tell you. The only ...

Advantages: all around strong album Disadvantages: the singles didnt sell well
Well this is another of the CD's that having returned home seem to have become a fixture on my CD player. Everyone knows who Charlotte Church is, shes the little girl who sang classical/opera music discovered by Richard and Judy, but she has grown up and as this happen it was somewhat inevtiable that she would choose to aim an album at the popular music market, her vocal talent in undeniable but how well does it cross to pop music?
This album was ... ...is packed with songs for strong women, Call My Name the first track tells the story of a sexually confident girl far removed from the young girl was saw singing 'old person' music just a few years ago.
The first release from the album was Crazy Chick. Lyrically it isnt the stuff of genius but then who would expect that? It set the standard for the rest of the album. The song is about a girl who despite being confident and happy within herself has ...

Advantages: Excellent variety of songs and full of soul Disadvantages: not for everyone.
The path from Classical singer to pop icon is a very tricky one, with many artists regretting their crossover. The debut album from Charlotte Church has helped her to crossover completely into the world of pop in one record, while still maintaining the musical integrity which goes with the classical genre. The opening track, "Call my Name" sets the tone for the album with a strong, "Not for kids" message. At only 3 minutes in length it is short and ... ...track is a breath of fresh air for pop music. From here on there is a definite trend of relationship troubles and insecurity. Understandable for someone of Church's age.
The second track, "Crazy chick" was the first single taken form the album, and after listening to the whole album it is clear it was a good choice. A very simple song: a couple of verses and a catchy chorus, supplemented by Church's amazing vocal ability. Different from the later ...

Charlotte Church is a girl who seems to know her own mind - she knows what she likes and what she doesn't and she won't be forced in to a corner by anyone. So perhaps, bearing this in mind, I should have expected her to produce an album like this, full of strong and original songs that seem to have been created especially for her, with no close resemblance to the rest of those abundant female solo artists. I, however, for some reason did not have ... ...was releasing an album. I knew as soon as I heard that Charlotte had hired removals to chuck out her past operatic persona and transport her to the contemporary world of pop that I would be buying her album, no matter what. I made this decision based on two reasons - my personal indulgence of late teens/twenty somethings who can't quite hold their alcohol and don't quite care, myself fitting undeniably in to this category, and my love of cheesy girly ...

Advantages: can be used in various situations Disadvantages: lyrics on some songs could be better
After initially buying this album after hearing the singles released, "call my name" and "crazy chick" I was pleasantly surprised at how good the rest of the songs were. My favourite song on the album is "show a little faith" which has excellent lyrics that can relate to almost anybody in many different situations. Other favourites on the album are "confessional song" and "easy way out" although confessional song doesn't have the best lyrics I've ... ...excellent and shows of Charlottes talented voice very well. The whole album is extremely easy listening and I don't find myself skipping any tracks to get to the next one as I often would do with other albums. The album is great for playing as background music or in the car. It has a mixture of slow and upbeat songs so it lifts your mood with some songs and helps calm you with others.
I bought this album about four months ago from wooworths for ...
