Ray Davies……As Kinky as Me!!!

When I was browsing through HMV in my last opinion I also bought an album by a gentleman called Ray Davies or should I say the fabulous Kinks. To me Ray Davies is The Kinks so don’t be telling me that this in the wrong category ok….Please tell me that Grinchgirl isn’t the category manager for music, she takes no prisoners..lol..

Anyway back to Mr Davies and his group the Kinks, why are they one of my favourite bands. I suppose they remind me of when I was a kid and basically remind me of when life was so easy….I was a young teenager when they brought out records like Lola and Apeman…….

The thing about Ray was he had the knack of putting a catchy tune with real meaningful lyrics. As I got older a lot of his songs took on even more meaning to a lot of the scars that life was to hand me growing up in troubled Belfast and a world full of hate and bigotry……

Great songs like “Death of a Clown” and “Waterloo Sunset” just make you enjoy not only his songs but his lyrics, which can rip right into your very soul…I love that song “Death of a Clown”, sort of tells you how years of hurt can all but kill even the best of clowns….Can relate to that one!!..

Or real classics like “Lola”, which I must have heard when I was about 13, I didn’t really take in the sexual undertones of that song back then but it is one hell of a song…By the way it’s about a man that picks up a girl who is actually a guy…Great song…….

Plus the fact that he had a really unique voice, and a great style. Good old Ray is still doing live concerts and performed an acoustic concert in Belfast last year. My friend went to it and said it was great but that Ray unfortunately looked a bit rough on it. Still I guess we cant all look good for our age like myself

In fact I think I admire the guy that much that I am going to phone up Matthew Kelly from the show “Stars in their Eyes”, and yes “ Tonight Matthew, Art is going to be Ray Davies from The Kinks”. Yep I am going to go on that show because I know I could easily win it. So would you lot vote for me??

Anyway if you haven’t heard of Ray Davies I can only compare him to John Lennon. They are both great songwriters and both have the skill to take a simple little tune and match it with terrific lyrics. So if you haven’t heard any of the songs by this master then go to your nearest music shop and ask the assistant for an album by The Kinks..If the assistant has red hair and a badge with Sarah on it, say Arthur sent you…….

My all time great song by one of music’s masters is a simple little song called “Apeman”. The song was written nearly 30 years ago but is so relevant to the world we live in today. Here are the main verses from it……

I don’t feel safe in this world no more,
I don’t want to die in a nuclear war,
I want to sail away to a distant shore,
And make like an Apeman,
Be my Apegirl baby………………..

So there you go, he wrote so many great songs, I guess I agree with most of his lyrics. If you fancy joining me on that Island then drop me a line………
