Captain Rock born Ronald Wayne Greene is one of the great showmen of Hip Hop, and is happy on stage as he is in the studio. Before being Captain Rock he was Dr Jeckyll and Mr Hyde's live DJ from their period in the Harlem World Crew where he was known as DJ Ronnie Green. Creating his own crew known as "The Cosmic Crew" but The Cosmic Crew didn't exist longer than the time it took to make the record "Cosmic Blast". Since they all went on to lucrative careers of their own, and these were The Aleems, Dr Jeckyll & Mr Hyde, Scratch Al-D and Marley Marl. Captain Rock surely rocked the house with his live performance on UK Fresh 86 where he allegedly stripped down to his thong on stage. Captain Rock's musical character is a boy from out of space from planet Zone who lands on earth to teach us to rock. He also likes to fly around picking up girls in his Def ship.

Back to the future shock is a very special album with its fine blend of hip-hop electro tracks and the clear exploration of Captain Rock exploring musical styles possibly attempting to find his niche. Two of the releases on the album include "You Stink" and "Bongo Beats" which are more straight up rap cuts in comparison with his other electro tracks, and his debut "Cosmic Glide" which was more on the pre-electro disco-funk rap tip popular before Planet Rock changed everything. The only record he wrote the lyrics for on the album was "Cosmic Blast" an ironically this is where Captain Rock seems to be at his best. The track blends a sweet electro melody with Captain laying down crisp lyrics and there is also some neat human beat-box mid way through and electric guitar to play the single out. Four of the tracks on the album are variations of tracks already on the album but these are dubbed instrumentals. That's not a problem though since the music is good and it gives you the opportunity to drop your own lyrics over the top. "The Return of Captain Rock" is a like an anthem for the Captain and i love the way it chants "Rock, Rock, Rock with Captain Rock, He Rocks" parts of the track have some serious bass and the track displays some serious artistic flair. Possibly my favourite track of the album is "To The Future Shock" and with its space theme music is the most fitting to the Captain Rock character, and the electro elements are really impressive.

Excerpt of an interview with Captain Rock
JayQuan: Where are you from, and how did you get into Hip Hop? Capt Rock: I am from Manhattan and I started as a DJ for Jeckyll & Hyde. I was called DJ Ronnie Green.
JQ : Did you ever release material with them as their DJ ?
CR : No , the Aleems who owned NIA records had a concept for the Captain Rock character and they had auditions , and Jeckyll & Hyde took me to them .
JQ : Was Cosmic Glide your first record with NIA.
CR : Yes and it didn't do well at all....I think the Aleems lost faith a little after that first single .
JQ : The return of Captain Rock did better right ?
CR : Yes , not in New York but in the UK and down South it was huge .
JQ : Who did the writing on those songs ?
CR : Jeckyll & Hyde did all but Cosmic Blast - I wrote that one .
JQ : How about Future Shock...did that do well...it was hot here in VA.
CR : Yes it did very well especially in Philly...I remember getting in the car with the Aleems and driving all over the country with a trunk full of records .
JQ : I think your best joint was Cosmic Blast....it had Scratching , Beat-boxing and the whole 9 . It was a lot slower than your other records.
CR : Yeah Dj Darryll D did the Scratching , and Richie Rich Beat-boxed . I wrote that record in front of my projects in like 2 days. It was very big in New York....probably the slower tempo.
JQ : I didn't like the You Stink / House Of Rock single...
CR : That sucked....it was terrible....the Aleems were experimenting....it was like the downfall.
JQ : In 1986 you did Bongo Beats...that was hot....how did it do?
CR : Not well ..It wasn't promoted at all...by that time the Aleems thought that Capt Rock was over , and they were putting all the money into their stuff with Leroy Burgess.
JQ : Who did you perform with during your career ?
CR : Man....Mick Jagger , Run DMC , LL Cool J , Chaka Khan , Rebbie Jackson , Whodini.....
JQ : What do you think of current rap ?
CR : I don't like all the cursing , and negativity ......we paved the way for the current rappers , and I don't like the subject matter . We use to go to the schools, hospitals , basketball tournaments......everywhere when we toured . I don't see that now. We respected what we were doing.......these guys are making a lot of money, but there is no respect.
