Salvador, in the state of Bahia, north east Brazil (or São Salvador da Baía de Todos os Santos as it was named in the past) was the first colonial capital city of Brazil and, although power shifted to Rio de Janeiro in the late eighteenth century, then to Brasilia in 1960, it retains much of it's past grandeur and colonial architecture. One of the main reasons to come here, however, is the wonderful mix of cultural influences that make the cuisine, music and lifestyle here so different even to other parts of Brazil. The population of over three million, consists mainly of people with African origins descended from slaves, although there have been many other strong influences through Salvador's history. A Christmas Caro

Advantages: Plenty for armchair sleuths to get into
Disadvantages: Too many characters

It's an unusual crime novel these days that has me guessing until the very end so it was a rare pleasure to read Caro Ramsay's "Singing to the Dead" and find a plot stuffed to the limit with twists and turns and characters I found genuinely engaging and wanted to know more about. While Christmas is supposed to be a time of goodwill to all, the arrival of a new boss in Glasgow's Partickhill police station divides the already depleted team. Just when everyone is thinking of winding down, a series of investigations stretch the officers to the limit. The apparently straightforward death of a pensioner in an accidental house fire turns out to be something much more serious and threatens to overshadow the disappearance of two young boys in separate incidents. IF YOU ASK ME Y?

Advantages: Beautiful light powdery rose fragrence.
Disadvantages: Lasting power not too great.

'Y' Perfume by Yves Saint Laurent Y is one of the many perfumes from the range of Yves Saint Laurent. It comes in a plain white box with gold writing and a large Y to the front. The weight on the bottle I have, which is a vaporisateur is 100ml 3.3 fl oz. The bottle is square and the gold push down spray top is a fanned shape. It has a good solid look to it, and is finished off with gold writing to the front. Created in 1964, Y was brought out to represent the haute couture of the house of Yves Saint Laurent. It's a classic fragrance, quite timeless really, and a suitable perfume for day or night I would say. It's light and green, with notes of jasmine. It has a delicate smell of powdery roses, quite lovely, and Y is one of my very favourite perfumes. I find it a little similar to Rive Gauche, only much ...
