Dexys’ comeback single Plan B was a glorious rush of sound kicked off by Kevin Rowlands’ firm testament “You’ve always been searching for something” and carried off by a triumphant solo from Big Jim Patterson, who had taken over from Al Archer and JB Blythe as Rowlands’ co-writer and the group’s brass arranger. Over the next few months, the band gave sporadic performances of their Projected Passion revue, immaculately turned out in hooded tracksuits, boxing boots and short pony tails.
The Revue also featured comedians, a dance troupe and a string section. Instead of mirroring the shimmering evanescence of the Philadelphia sound, the strings sounded more like a classical quartet. This intimate feel became a crucial part of Dexys’ sound on the next single, The Celtic Soul Brothers, which saw the incorporation of fiddlers Steve Brennan and Helen O’Hara under the name of the Emerald Express.
Dexys’ follow up, Come On Eileen, brought the band their second UK number 1 and featured brass alongside the strings. The resulting sound, superbly realised on the ballad Old on the album Too Rye Ay (which featured all three singles) was similar to, though slightly rougher than, the blend of irish folk, soul and r&b pioneered by Van Morrison since St Dominic’s Preview in 1972. Dexys acknowledged their deby to Morrison by covering his Jackie Wilson Said on Too Rye Ay.
