If you are the kind of person that hears one song and judges a band upon that song then you are not going to like Tool. But if you are willing to try something new you could really come to enjoy this album.
The vocals are provided by James Maynard and in my opinion he is one of the finest front men around. His vocals are soothing and there is NO screaming, admittedly there are the louder vocal parts, however a lot of it is just soothing singing.
The guitaring is outstanding, one minute the guitaring is loud and the next it will be quite and relaxing. The guitarist is a very skilled person to be able to play like this and it fits in with the singing perfectly.
The drumming/percussion really is incredible, its is like no other drummer around to give you an idea of all the percussion that goes into this think about the size of your average garden shed, times it by two, maybe three, that’s how big the drummers set is. The beats are incredible, its is indescribable really and it has to be heard to truly appreciate it. It really is something special.
The Inlay of the CD is brilliant. The CD had a cover on top of it which you slide the main case out of. The inlay is See through paper with a design on it and as you take away each page you loose more and more of the picture to reveal something completely different at the end. It looks really good
Each of the songs on the album are quite long, yet they are not boring, it masses to a total of 74 minutes of music. Each song tells a story and therefore all of the lyrics are meaniful and really quite origanal. Here is a break down and a small bit about each of the songs on the album; 1)The Grudge The first song on the album and quite a good start. The song gets heavier and heavier as it goes through, its not heavy as such, its more loud then heavy. All the way through the soothing vocals and the song ending in one big shout and some amazing guitaring.
2)Eon Blue Apocalypse This is a interlude between the two songs, it is nice relaxed guitaring for a minutes and it leads into the next song very well.
3)The Patient The patient starts off as a slow hypnotising kind of song, with gentle vocals and a nice slow steady beat, its quite relaxing until half way through the guitaring burst in with an amazing solo. From this point the song speed picks up with some amazing guitaring and drumming. This song really does prove how accomplished the members of tool are as instrumentalists.
4)Mantra Is a interlude between the two songs, it is a weird droning sound which gets louder and quiter and so on, it leads very nicely into the next song,
5)Schism The song title means a Division within the church. This is the only song I know was released as a single from this album, it has steady guitaring and beats for the first part of the song. The guitaring has of course its solo parts and James Maynard provides some excellent lyrics.
6)Parbol This track and the following track are basically one big song, they lead into each other, this song is quite and relaxing, with soothing vocals and instrumental playing. Then at the end of the this track just as it begins to fall quiet the next song starts.
7)Parabola Bursts in with an amazing beat and some amazing guitaring. This song is one of the thew songs on the album which is loud all the way through. It has some simply amazing riffs and to be quite frank its incredible!
8)Ticks And Leaches This is the “Heaviest” song on the album, I say heavy but it isn’t really heavy at all, it is just loud and each instruments is loud and clear rather then a big jumbly mess like most metal music. The vocals are loud and piercing yet still there is no screaming. In this song you can truly enjoy the amazing percussion.
9)Lateralus A brilliant relaxing song all the way through, a truly beautiful song. This is another song when you can truly appreciate all aspects of the band.
10)Disposition This is by far the most relaxing song on the album. Its quite guitaring with a steady percussion and soothing lyrics, it really is something!
11)Reflection This is the longest song on the album(about 11minutes) and it 11 minutes of everything that is good about this album. It has a range of different styles through the song and is really good
12)Triad This song is pretty good but you can tell the end of the album is near, the guitaring is still amazing and its still a really good song but towards the end of the song it is just missing the “umph” the rest of the album has.
13)Faaip De Qiad The final track is just weird.
Admittedly when I first listened to this album I wasn’t to sure if I liked it and it just seemed really quite boring to me, but then I listened to it again, then again and then I came to appreciate the value of this album as a true accomplishment in the world of music. Im not saying that just because im a fan of theirs but this album truly is a master piece and I really would recommend it to anyone who wants to try some new music. My step farther who listens to Jazz and soul music enjoyed this album and commented on how well it was put together and that really is something.
Tool have made when of the finest C.D’s available on the market, even if you don’t like the style or the music you could well still appreciate the skill and thought that went into putting this album together, This album is a master piece, as simple as that!
When I listen to this album I sit in complete ore stunned by it. Give It a chance and I can guarantee you will enjoy it aswell.
...you into something that most Tool fans shouldn't find surprising: Tool have found the way, and have followed the path. That's right, I believe that Lateralus has topped Aenima. Now, I'm not saying this after having heard the album only several times. I have listened through the entire album over a dozen times already, trying to digest every bit of the album and make as much sense of it as I can. In the months to come I will no doubt discover new ... ...are about as "metal" as Tool have ever sounded. This is not to say that the entire album is marred by overly ferocious overtones...the soothing, introspective moments remain, and are in great abundance across the album, even in the heavier songs. Above all else, however, Lateralus demonstrates maturity. I'd say that in general maturity is the album's motif; song structures are more intricate, the guitar work is more daring, and the vocals are near ...

Advantages: brilliantly mature, tense and original Disadvantages: Tick and Leeches could have been a great track, but...
TOOL are not the kind of band I would normally listen to. Opiate is OK, I’ve only ever heard Undertow once and can’t remember much about it. Aenima starts well but gets bombastic and rather repetitive – though never generic. Lateralus is something entirely different and new. I was given the album to listen to by a friend at work. All well and good. He seemed to have a canny knack for knowing what I’d like, which is odd as I usually dislike anything ... ...a huge musical leap for TOOL from anything they had done previously. It is a more mature work; it is not as bombastic as some of their earlier albums. I realise most TOOL fans probably won’t agree with this assertion but the album feels to me to be something greater than the sum of its parts. Something fresher, newer and altogether original. It is as if TOOL are finding their own place away from either the mainstream or the sidelines. They have created ...

Advantages: Very alternative time changes, original, dark and innovative Disadvantages: Very alternative time changes, songs can be too long for average listeners
...stage, but its bands like Tool that have always been one step ahead both mentally and musically. Hold on, bands like Tool? Try and name me one and you will fall flat on your face. Of course other bands can write 'long songs' and can write some very innovative stuff but no other band can write a song as long as 11 minutes in length and keep it interesting and no other band is as effectively innovative as Tool.
Ah, now that ive got that off of my ... ...track, that this is a tool album, setting a dark mood for the rest of the album, as their previous releases did. I wont take you step by step through every single part of each song because the songs are very long, and very comlicated and i ultimately dont want to spoil it for you, because each song will have some sort of suprise in store for you. My favourite songs on the album are, personally, 'Parabol' and Parabola' , 'Reflection', 'Lateralus' ...

This album is possibly the best album i have ever heard in my entire existance!! The opening track "The Grudge" sets up the rest of the album beautifully with its steady intro then crescendo into a massively heavy "Prog Metal" song. There really are no songs on this album that i dislike in anyway. Schism, one of their better known songs is on this album and it really keeps the tempo going. Every now and again there is an interlude track, which alothough ...

Advantages: Tool Evolve, Again Disadvantages: None !
This was a HIGHLY awaiting Tool Album. The band only tend to release once ever 3 to 4 years, so every single fan was obviously waiting with baited breath after the release and come-down of Aenima
I would class this band as a modern day Led Zeppelin, with their groudbreaking and somewhat pyschadelic tecniques that never cease to amaze.
Lateralus is an absolutely STUNNING album which shows Tool evolving once again. This album and accompanying videos has won a string of awards from many prestigious radio shows/magazines etc including
The first time i heard the record it stunned me to silence and i had to listen to it again and again. More than one could ever expect, if anyone would so bold as to expect anything or have pre-conceptions at all!

Advantages: Maynard James Keenan on vocals, excellent album artwork, outstanding transcendental music. Disadvantages: not easy listening
My favourite album of all time. Lateralus has some incredible haunting vocals and really intense proggy riffs with an experimental edge. Every single track on this album is excellent, particularly the tranistion between 'Parabol' and 'Parabola.' Vocals alternate between being incredibly loud and powerful to light and delicate. I have nothing bad to say about this album. It is best if you just let each track play after the other, paying attention to the subtle nuances of each note, while appreciating the album in its entirety. This remarkable piece of powerful fusion-conscious art transcends the intense anger that fuels it, creating such awesome and unique bitersweet sonic progression, with visceral and minimalistic textures, as well as elements of Far Eastern music. This is the band's Magnum Opus. For fans of A Perfect Circle, Radiohead ...
Advantages: Unique and beautiful Disadvantages: Not to everyones taste
beautiful tune which I see as almost a love song. It gentle melody and sweet lyrics are completely different to those other louder tunes.
Although all members of the band are skilled and unique it is really the drummer that adds spice to this album. His drum solos are amazing and yet the other members manage to keep up.
Tool is a band that you'll either love or hate, there's no in-between. However I do suggest that you shouldn't judge them on the strength of a single song. 'Lateralus' is an album that is designed to be listened to all the way through. It is an album that exists as a whole and should be listened to as such.
To classify a band such as Tool I would list them as heavy progressive rock. They usually appeal to metal fans in particular those that like A Perfect Circle (lead singer Maynard fronts both bands), Disturbed or even ...
