Toscanini - Complete 1938 Concert

Advantages: Gorgeous music, played with much passion

...Introduction: One of the things I love the most about classical music is that it is impossible to get to know everything that is written in the genre - no matter how much you listen to, study, play or find on the dustiest shelf in some archive in the middle of nowhere - there will always be something new just around the corner... Unfortunately it is often the case that concert promoters, orchestral administrators, record companies and even many musicians prefer to stick with what they know than take the risk in putting on something which the average listener or audience member is unlikely to have ever come across. Everyone talks about the old arguments of not wanting to take a financial risk - which is understandable, but I do feel strongly that sometimes we do need to insert new musical blood into our concert and listening lives... Advantages: Glorious recorded sound, a fine group of soloists
Disadvantages: Some fans may not like Sutherland in this music

...(singing for Toscanini). Her voice is very different from Angela Gheorghiu so if that is the sort of voice you like in this music you may be disappointed by Sutherland's style. Marilyn Horne is perhaps the most rounded of any of the soloists with a fine line and that glorious voice sitting well among these romantic surroundings despite her most commonly being associated with earlier works such as Rossini and bel canto. The conducting is a little fierce but very exciting.... Read review

He started to learn how to play the trombone and had such a love for music, he joined the Ben Pollack Orchestra, where he started to write his own music. Glenn also played with people like Benny Goodman and Ray Nobel. In 1937, he formed his own band, playing at some hotels, on the radio and did some recordings. He formed his own Orchestra in 1938, this Orchestra became the core to what we know now as the Glenn Miller Orchestra. This is when he won his first Gold Disc for "Chattanooga Choo Choo". During the was Glenn helped the war effort. His last public proformance was in 1942, when he joined the army and was assigned to the Army Specialist Corps, he then transferred to the Army Air Corps.
