Advantages: Possibly the best tenor saxophonist ever - without a doubt the best still alive! Disadvantages: None - if you want to see him live, you should try to soon - he's getting on a bit now - 73 yrs old now - still as good as ever though!
SonnyRollins is my favourite tenor saxophonist, and is in my opinion the best saxophonist ever. Sonny has a lovely deep, rich tone, right the way from the bottom of his horn to the top. Like many of the great jazz musicians, Sonny was not only a great player, but also a great composer, having written loads of tunes, including St Thomas, Tenor Madness, Doxy, Oleo, Airegin, to name but a few.
SonnyRollins has recorded many famous C.D.'s, but perhaps his best two, and my favourite are saxophone colossus and tenor madness (featuring a stunning recording of tenor madness with coltrane and rollins playing together!) Both of these C.D's feature SonnyRollins in full swing, at the top of his playing, with his classic tone and characteristic phrasing and solo's.
Throughout his life, SonnyRollins had a chance to play and record ...

I recently received a PSP as a present, and went to buy a few games for it. Now, call it sensible, or call it nerdy, I always research the games that i am going to buy at sites like Gamespot. Pursuit force scored very highly with them, and also received some great feedback from members there. That was enough for me, and i bought a copy immediately. I was able to pick it up for peanuts on ebay, I think it cost me about four quid.
The game itself is produced by bigbig, and puts you in the guise of a newly recruited cop, in the new pursuit force team. You are there to battle against the five gangs that are wreaking havoc in the city. You are given a series of missions to complete, and they are generally set against the clock. This makes the game very difficult, as you not only have to complete the objectives of that mission, but also ...
Advantages: Great for children and adults alike. Disadvantages: Drawing a blank here...
Up in a Big Balloon is the second record in the Musical Mystery Tour, a series of lighthearted records aimed (not solely) at Children from folk duo Simon Mayor and Hilary James. It's guaranteed to have children singing, rather than screaming, all the way to the car's destination, leaving the adults free to... well... sing along as well.
Catchy is the operative term here. Quick one-liners, simple structures and lyrics, tenuous rhymes to die for; you can't but fall in love with James and Mayor's offering on the first listening. Naturally, the main genre is folk, mandolins, couble basses guitars are the running musical theme. However, everything is covered (in both senses of the word), from classical to country and western.
The songs are interspersed by merry banter between the couple, who assume various roles connected ...

Album Notes
Personnel: Sonny Rollins (tenor saxophone); Earl Coleman (vocals); Kenny Drew (piano); George Morrow (bass); Max Roach (drums). Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Hackensack, New Jersey on December 7, 1956. Originally released on Prestige (7126) ("Sonny Boy" was recorded in the same session, but was released previously on the album SONNY BOY (Prestige 7207)). Includes liner notes by Ira Gitler. Digitally remastered by Joe Tarantino (1989, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California). This 1956 session was originally comprised of three Sonny Rollins originals and two vocal numbers ("Two Different worlds" and "My Ideal") with guest Earl Coleman joining the accompanying trio of pianist Kenny Drew, bass player George Morrow and drummer Max Roach. The CD reissue adds to the album a wonderful eight minute "Sonny Boy," which is a joy to behold and was clearly only left off the original release because of time constraints. Rollins dazzles throughout with his heartfelt playing which is full of breathtaking, wide-awake life. He loves to roll in the aisle laughing (and always with a rich, muscular sense of humor) and he loves to burn with the passion of a ballad. Additionally, hearing him play off of a human voice shows just how much of the language of emotion he's able to conjure through his tenor saxophone. This is a superlative album by one of the major instrumentalists of this century.
Album Reviews
Down Beat - 4 Stars - Very Good "Rollins in two moods--galloping and relaxed. As another indication of Rollins' stature, this is recommended."
