...This album heralded a return to form for the band. The album see’s Anderson and company experimenting with English and Celtic folk rock roots. It was not folky in a traditional way and was still rockier and more quirky than the Fairport Convention type of folk rock. Nevertheless traditional folk instruments like the marimba, glockenspiel, nakers and tabor were used in the creation of this album. The album boasted a great hit which heralded Tulls last Top Of The Pops performance “Ring Out Solstice Bells” a song to appear on many a Christmas compilation album in the future.... Read review

Advantages: brings home some musical magic!
Disadvantages: could be a better quality recording!

...Contains the amazingly catchy songs from the musical! A must have for any musical fanatic! It really does bring home a bit of the magic from the musicals! i would consider it a 5* sound track and i completely one hundred and ten percent recomend it! This sound track will take you on a journey as if you were watching the actual musical! The catchy songs will have you asking 'please sir can i have some more' lol! I only wish that i had purchased it sooner than i did! The only draw back is that the songs could be of a better quality recording than they actually are, but by all means they are not bad by a long shot! Advantages: Great Pop-Punk Rock

...Everclear have had the great idea of releasing two albums in fairly close succession rather than releasing a double album. The first, "Songs from an American Movie Volume 1: Learning How To Smile" is lighter than previous Everclear albums, and floats along perfectly, blending superb melodies with Art Alexis's smooth vocals. This is perfectly formed pop-punk, but at the same time Everclear combine their sing-a-long tunes with a much more mature feel to that of Blink 182, for example. Songs like 'Here We Go Again', 'Unemployed Boyfriend' and 'Wonderful'are crisp and refreshingly melodic. The result is an album which is perfect in almost every way, and provides a superb transition between summer and autumn.... Read review
