...were you? It is a tragic song about the end of a relationship. She knows he is about to break up with her but she doesn’t want to hear the words so she tells him to ‘don’t speak’.
It’s a very soft song and suitable for a slow dance or relaxing.

The song starts with music that’s I’m sure is from a film when something ‘tragic’ happens. It is about a kingdom that has gone wrong. The king is cold and so cruel ‘icicles drip from his eyes’. Remember when Don’t Speak made number one in 1995? It really doesn’t seem that long ago. Nobody seemed to hear of No Doubt before or after but that’s because they are an underground band.
This is one of many of their albums, their latest being ‘Return to Saturn’. So What All The Music About?
1: Spider Webs (4.28) This is about an obsessed boyfriend. He constantly rings Gwen (lead singer) and it annoys her so much she screens the number before answering. It seems at first she puts up with it but after a while it’s got worse and worse until she is being woken up in the middle of the night.
Spider webs are a metaphor representing the bond she has with him. She is tangled in his web and can’t escape like prey can’t from a spider.
The music in the background features a range of instruments such as what sounds like a trumpet but I’m not sure. It has a very positive beat and is also very catchy. You will soon find yourself singing along.
2: Excuse Me Mr (3.04) This is about love. It talks about how love is free but it causes so much pain and drives you mad that it costs loads in ‘mental custody’. Gwen asks for some time with the man she likes and in the end goes up to him and says ‘excuse me Mr’ I would like to spend some time with you.
3: Just A Girl (3.29) This was released as a single. It is about how people protect women and how society reacts different to women and men i.e. you can’t hit a women. The lyrics talks about not being able to go out late and just cause she is pretty and petite she can’t have any rights.
It has a very jolly backing music maybe because she is releasing all he thoughts and she is glad to get rid of all her built up ground.
4: Happy Now (3.43) This about breaking up in a relationship. Gwen has decided that even though she cares for her ex-boyfriend she wont take him back and is he really happy with his decision. Just again there is a positive vibe in this song because she is looking forward to her revenge when he releases his mistake.
5: Different People (4.34) This is about how brothers and sisters can grow up together and yet be so different. How one day you can hate each other and argue but there are times when you get along and its like you are best friends. It talks about how famous people make the less difference in the world and the person who makes the difference are parents because they set the example for their child.
6: Hey You (3.34) This is how someone is still like a child but instead of playing with dolls now they play with their own life. People’s hopes for the future can be so high and they are really just a dream because they will never happen. People will be disappointed unless they stop playing and take part in life.
7: The Climb (6.37) This about people getting into something too deep so in the end they cant escape and they must just keep climbing up and up because there is no turning back. I don’t really like this song myself. It’s the longest song on the album and seems to drag on and on.
8: Sixteen (3.21) This song is about growing up. Someone has only just turned 16 and they are starting to see what really goes on. They feel grown up but really they are still young (this is a lie I’M 16 AND I AM A BIG GIRL NOW!!!) Its one of the most upbeat and guitarist song on the album and its really good. It has extracts of a sample but I’m sure there is not a DJ in the band.
9: Sunday Morning (4.33) This is about how she thought she knew someone but found out she really didn’t. They had changed and when she looks at how they are not they are not a very nice person. She is upset because the person is now a stranger and seems to her that they changed over night. I don’t really like this song.
10: Don’t Speak (4.23) I think that everybody has heard Don’t Speak, which made it to no.1 in 1996. If you haven’t where were you? It is a tragic song about the end of a relationship. She knows he is about to break up with her but she doesn’t want to hear the words so she tells him to ‘don’t speak’. It’s a very soft song and suitable for a slow dance or relaxing.
11: You Can Do It (4.13) This song has a very catchy happy beat. While just listening to it I’ve found myself dancing. The song is about someone getting away from all their ties and living a wild life. She wants them to be normal again and live a normal life. She encourages them by saying ‘You Can Do It’. Its not one of the songs I normally listen to but it is very catchy.
12: World Go Round (4.09) This about the environment. Pollution, over population and cruelty to animals are all hidden issues in the song. The title suggests that we are tampering with nature too much and soon the earth will stop spinning and will have to find an alternative. If you go back in the past there were no worries of the environment but now there are because the future is looking worrying.
13: End It On This (3.45) This is about the end of a relationship (again). After being with her lover for years she realises that she doesn’t care for them and she is only with them for security. She dreamed of a family together but really she didn’t want it with them it was just an illusion. The person has changed and so has what they want in life, they are too different and so she says ‘lets end it’.
14: Tragic Kingdom (5.31) The song starts with music that’s I’m sure is from a film when something ‘tragic’ happens. It is about a kingdom that has gone wrong. The king is cold and so cruel ‘icicles drip from his eyes’. He is over thrown by the people who then gain the power. Each person promises to be good but they all abuse the power and are the same as who they overthrown. It’s basically like a tragic fairy tale told by music. It’s not bad however.
Over the entire album is a bit repetitive. There are songs I skip that are just fillers and a lot of the tracks are the same minus the lyrics. HOWEVER there are some brilliant songs on the album as well such as ‘Just a girl’ and ‘Don’t speak’
Advantages: A very interesting album. Disadvantages: Not everybody's cup of tea, but the same could be said abbout any album.
...telling the tale of "The Tragic Kingdom". All in all this album is worth having in your cd collection, and yet again I recommend it to you. Pop-punk at it's best, and a band that fit well with other bands in the Ska category, well living up to the standard of Madness. No Doubt indeed. ...

The perfection of Gwen Steffani sums up all that is brilliant about this entire album. I could just say that, but I know that I have a word limit to fulfil, I also know that technically it is not really true. That although she is a superb frontwoman/lyricist and all round sex goddess, there are innumerable factors which conspire to make this album absolutely outstanding. There is firstly the all consuming power and passion of the band, evident from ... ...steel drums and trumpet along with angry shouting Steffani and really loud guitar accompiament. The use of unusual musical instruments is evident throughout this album, whilst I would not go as far as to describe No Doubt as a Ska-Punk band, their Orange County roots and Madness based inspiration is obvious. They combine saxophone, steel drums, cello, sitar and trombone with the more traditional instruments of a rock band, this inspired use of variety ...

Tragic Kingdom also includes the releases Just a Girl (taken from Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion soundtrack) and Spiderwebs (a track that was released before Dont Speak but failed to make an impression on the charts!) Wow! This track tops it off so well.
I mean it does have some lyrics that are a bit weird, about a Kingdom that has been locked up and hidden and lost from the world that is relightened, paying homage to a king, the drawbridge opened, a bit mythical really. Starts off with dialog of an aeroplane tannoy.
The music is dramatic after that and the lyrics are wicked, all about destiny and the lost ...

...vocals, as demonstrated clearly in Tragic Kingdom. They have this thing about oranges / mandarins s their CD cover is decorated with many pictures of them!
There is a sort of "I'm so innocent, but I'm gorwing up" feel to this album. The range of tracks in this album is fairly diverse, but it all somehow manages to peice itself together perfectly. This album is almost perfect, and 'perfect' is a word I rarely use.

Advantages: 15 excellent and original songs from one of the best bands around Disadvantages: may be the last album we hear form them!
This being their fifth album to date, we get to see a brilliant collection of some of NoDoubts finest work, including classics such as Don't speak and Hey baby. And the excellent cover of It's my life making this one of the best albums of all time. It shows all the aspects of NoDoubt's original and memorable talent.Thsitalent has progressed through the years and this album combines the very best of it.
This outstanding mix of madness inspired tracks are taken form the early days of 1992 up until their most recent songs of 2003.
All the songs have been superbly selected from the four outstanding albums the band have created: TragicKingdom, Return of Saturn, NoDoubt and Rock Steady. Making this album the cream of the crop. ...
I only found out that NoDoubt had other albums before TragicKingdom when browsing on Amazon.co.uk! I found out that there were two previous albums they being; NoDoubt and The Beacon Street Collection! of what my review is about.
I was reluctant at first to purchase this album as it doesn’t have many tracks- only 10! but I went for it and ordered it on Amazon.
I was very excited to get it as I am a big fan of their latest album. I bought a re-issue of their independent release which was from 1995 The title is named so because it is a collection of their recordings which span 2 years! Some of the tracks were recorded in the south bay and the rest was recorded in a Garage on Beacon Street!
This album similar to the latest albums, have rock in it but in my view deals more with Ska influences and although sounding a bit ...

1991, they got their "big break". They got a contract with Interscope Records. Between school and working, they managed to record their 14-track debut album self titled NoDoubt. It was released in the March of 1992 but only sold 30,000 copies, which was a big disappointment.
They toured the Western states and then made a video for their song 'Trapped in a Box' for around $5000 but it was never played on MTV.
Moving along, in March 1993 they started the first sessions for the album, TRAGICKINGDOM, which is actually my favourite album of NoDoubt.
A lot of things happen in 1994, Eric leaves the band before TragicKingdom is finished to become an animator on the Simpson's and Gwen and Tony who were a couple for 7 years break up. The song "Don't Speak" evolved from a love song to a broken heart song.
In 1995, NoDoubt ...

No Doubt: Gwen Stefani (vocals); Tom Dumont (guitar); Eric Stefani (piano, keyboards); Tony Kanal (bass); Adrian Young (drums, percussion). Additional personnel: Aloke DasGupta (sitar); Melissa Hasin (cello); Gerard Boisse, Bill Bergman (saxophone); Greg Smith (baritone saxophone); Phil Jordan, Les Lovitt (trumpet); Nick Lane (trombone); Gabe McNair (trombone, percussion); Matthew Wilder (keyboards); Stephen Perkins (steel drums). Engineers include: Matt Hyde, Phil Kaffel, George Landress. No Doubt was nominated for the 1997 Grammy Award for Best New Artist. TRAGIC KINGDOM was nominated for a 1997 Grammy for Best Rock Album. "Don't Speak" was nominated for 1998 Grammys for Song Of The Year and Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal. No Doubt's members cite a strange variety of musical influences: Kiss, Prince and Madness, to name a few. And it's easy to imagine that their hometown itself, Anaheim, California (home to Disneyland), may have played a part in forming the band's schizophrenic, high-energy sound, which took TRAGIC KINGDOM, the band's second album, on a slow, steady ride up the pop charts. It finally hit No. 1 in December 1996, 14 months after it was released. This is ska-punk-new wave-dance music, with instrumentation ranging from hardcore guitar to mellow, reggae-style horns. Singer Gwen Stefani's voice is by turns peppy, almost adolescent ("Spiderwebs") and emotionally wailing; she can sound a lot like Concrete Blonde's Johnette Napolitano ("Just A Girl"). When Stefani sings, "I'm just a girl, little ol' me/Don't let me out of your sight," she does so without a hint of girlishness; her voice is all attitude, with a warbling edge of melodrama. For the most part, these are happy songs, though No Doubt do get philosophical on "Different People": "Once in a while I sit back/And think about the planet/Most of the time I trip on it/To kick back and think of how massive it all is/And how many others are on it."
Album Reviews
Rolling Stone (12/26/96, p.195) - "...a platinum-blond peach of a female singer, Gwen Stefani, who breaks up the asexual baggy-shorts-and-balloon pants monotony of alt-nation guy rock....No Doubt have a spry, white-suburban take on ska and Blondie-esque pop..."
