This is my favourite Dream Theater album, and would be in my top albums of all time section too.
It's one of the few albums which I find I can easily listen to in it's entirety.
As for whether it's the place to start with Dream Theater I don't know. You find with them that every album is completely different from the others. This is more 'Metal' and along the lines of Metallica, very heavy and riff based, whereas most are more Progressive and Rush style.
That's not to say that this is short of the Keyboards and shredding we all know and love from DT...
As I am - A great song, it's fairly slow, but very heavy and some masterful guitar work involved. This basically Dream Theater's rant at the record companies chopping and changing their music.
This Dying Soul - This again is a heavy and dark song. For those that don't know this is the sequel to my favourite DT song of all time; 'The Glass Prison' in the 'Alcoholics Anonymous' series . It is similar in many ways, and you notice some riffs from TGP (which is a good thing!).
Endless Sacrifice - If you want to hear one song from the album before you buy it or not, make it this song. Perhaps my second favourite DT song ever. It starts off with a cracking soft and slow ballad part, with a softly spoken verse, and then the distortion pedal is hit, and Petrucci unleashes one of the best riffs ever written. This is repeated a couple of times, then we have an instrumental/duel, then we are back into a second chorus and the song ends perfectly.
Honor Thy Father - Yet another superb song, some really excellent keyboards in this. I seem to be repeating myself a lot for these parts, but these first 4 songs are just that good, it's perhaps the best first 4 songs there have ever been in an album!
Vacant - I'd say the album has a blip, but that may be a tad harsh. This just isn't my thing, having said that it's very short, and after a couple of listens you see that this song does fit the album, and starts of the next song nicely.
Stream Of Consciousness - This is linked to the end of Vacant, and is an instrumental. Not just any instrumental I might add, and incredibly complex piece of music, with superb work from all contributing members (i.e. everyone but LaBrie). I think it's a tad long, meaning it's not a memorable instrumental unlike songs like 'The Ytse Jam', or Rush's 'YYZ'.
In The Name of God - Yet again, like the first 4 songs we have an awesomely heavy song, with many a solo. My favourite part of this song is a stand out harmonic (squealey), and really ties up a great album.
In conclusion all I've said is that pretty much all of the songs are great, may well seem like an unhelpful review, but trust me I'm speaking the truth, it's one of the few albums you can say there isn't a bad song). Anyway everyone must own this album! Whether you like your Heavy Metal, Prog-Metal, Guitar Virtuosity or whatever. Just buy it right now. I have many hundreds of albums but this is in the top 2 (After Master of Puppets), that must tell you something surely?

Advantages: Musicanship rivaled by very few in the world, Dream Theater possesses more "feel" now Disadvantages: A bit lacking for inspiration in the lyric department
