Having completed my collection of studio albums by Pixies, I'm always looking for something new, especially as merchandise is a pain to track down. (Nearly 2 years for a poster!!) However, today was my lucky day as I discovered two other recordings to add to my collection, at a CD fair in Leeds. What luck.
The first one of these CD's is Transatlantic. This is basically a Pixies live CD, from the Doolittle tour in 1989. The two gigs it is made up of were Chicago, Illinois, and Vienna, Austria. Most of the tracks are from the first gig, with just a handful at the end from Vienna.
For those of you that don't know much about Pixies music, they were about in the late '80's-early '90's, led by Frank Black, or Black Francis ,as he was then. Their style of music is pretty rock based, coupled with grunge, and a few country hints. Their live performance is highly energetic with screaming vocals, as opposed to Frank's usual more melodic tones. The guitar is brighter than ever, with a few mistakes throughout by all the band members... Oops.
The more well known tracks on the album include 'Caribou', 'Debaser', 'Monkey Gone to Heaven, 'Wave of mutilation', and 'Where is my mind?' - all of which featured on the best of album 'Death to the Pixies'. More rare tracks include one of Kim Deal's favourtie live tracks, 'Into the White', and 'Wave of mutilation' performed in a slow version, along with the normal speed version.
Unfortunately, as it's a live album recorded over a decade ago, there is the odd bit of crackling throughout, but it provides a very good listening experience for a loving Pixies fan, especially if, like myself, you were too young to see them all those years ago. However, I did manage to get it for £8, so it's a bargain if you ask me. As a recording, it shows both the emotive and the care free sides to the Pixies, providing an all round listening experience. My advice is grab it if you can.
