The best song on the album is either 'Tiny Vessels' or 'Transatlanticism' because these 2 are the ones that really get you into death cab.

Advantages: Ben Gibbards new improved voice Disadvantages: Not enough people have bought it
well what can i say? this album is the best on the discography and the best that death cab have ever produced. The album shows off what death cab for cutie can really do after a few years to perfect their sound, and thats what they've done.
When the album opens with 'The New Year' it sends shivers done you spine it's that incredible and for many gigs they used this song to open it.

Ben Gibbard's voice in this album is phenomenal, reaching new highs that it had ever had before. I think actually this album was the start of death cab for cutie. Before this album they were just a small band that a few hundred people had heard of and then, BANG, the hole of America know the initials DCFC.

Advantages: Beautiful lyrics like no other Disadvantages: 1 song on the album sound really out of place
DeathCab for Cutie, the names sounds scary but this US indie band are as cute as a barrell of kittens, and the music is as intelligent and poetic as ... an intelligent poet.
The band formed in 1997, and produced two albums before releasing Transatlanticism in 2003. These two previous albums gave DeathCab a loyal cult like following in the states. And the most recent album Transatlanticism announced a coming of age. But still DeathCab are barely even heard of in the UK.
The bands front man Ben Gibbard, is a lyrical genius and a musical multitasker who also is the front man for "The Postal Service" a band recently made reasonably famous by the release of the song "Such Great Heights" used to advertise the indie movie "Garden State"
The albums opening track "New Year" is a thunderous, direct and urgent track that acts for fans ...
Advantages: lyrics!! Disadvantages: few weak tracks
I have to admit I was cynical towards this album - what could possibly follow Transatlanticism? Plans didn't quite do it for me so I wasn't feeling too positive; however, DeathCab For Cutie have done it again - by 'it' I mean manage to completely blow me away with a CD. As usual, Gibbard's lyrics are a main factor towards their success, and in my opinion, this beats all of their previous work. Best tracks are "Cath" and "Grapevine Fires", not so strong are "Talking Bird" and "You Can Do Better Than Me" - DeathCab For Cutie often have a habit for dragging out the same chord for far too long - sometimes it works, as in "I Will Possess Your Heart"; sometimes it doesn't. Overall I am incredibly impressed and would quote this as one of my favourite albums of all time. ...

Album Notes
Death Cab For Cutie: Benjamin Gibbard, Nicholas Harmer, Jason McGerr, Christopher Walla. Additional personnel: The Barsuk Men's Choir. Recorded at The Hall Of Justice, Avast, Ironwood, Studio X, Seattle, Washington; Tiny Telephone Studios, San Francisco, California. Death Cab for Cutie finally delivers on its promise with its fourth album, TRANSATLANTICISM. Although the band's earlier outings have excellent moments, this collection of indie power-pop plays to Death Cab's strengths, wrapping Ben Gibbard's plaintive vocals and emotive lyrics in consistently dynamic and engaging arrangements. The album opens with the majestic surge of "The New Year," and moves to the instantly catchy "Lightness." While guitars chime over solid bass-and-drums backing, Gibbard's melancholy tales unfold, drawing the listener in further with each song, largely due to the perfect production of guitarist Chris Walla. By the time the wide-screen title track runs it course and the album ends with the oddly optimistic "A Lack of Color," it becomes clear that this is one of those albums that you'll listen to over and over again.
Album Reviews
Rolling Stone (11/27/03, p.93) - 3.5 stars out of 5 - "...[The album] presents a polished version of the heart-string-tugging formula that has earned the quartet its cultish following: melodic, melancholy songs about feeling both smart and confused, hopelessly romantic but wary of love..." Spin (11/03, p.112) - "...TRANSATLANTICISM is a breakup album that refuses to break down, full of striking, tactile imagery....Direct and beautiful..." - Grade: A- Mojo (12/03, p.122) - 3 stars out of 5 - "TRANSATLANTICISM is a further suite of touching vignettes, choice observations and killer lines." Uncut (11/03, p.107) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...This is a record of rare beauty and poise..." CMJ (12/29/03, p.6) - Ranked #6 in CMJ's "Top 10 of 2003" CMJ (10/6/03, p.4) - "...Makes ambition safe for the indie clique....new guitar textures and rhythmic ideas are everywhere..."
