Advantages: A lively, upbeat album which is tautly compiled, including all the great hits. Disadvantages: Lacks maybe one or two key songs. Album a little long.
...This album was compiled a few years before Dusty Springfield died of cancer in the 1990s, relaunching all of her hits onto a modern audience as well as allowing older audiences to relive her greatness. It is a fantastic disc for loyal fans of Dusty who want all of her hits on one disc, as well as a perfect gateway for new fans who want a taste of her music. Many of her well-known songs are here, including 'I Only Wanna Be With You', 'You Don't Have to Say You Love Me', 'I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself', 'The Look of Love' and 'Son of a Preacher Man'. It also includes 'What Have I Done To Deserve This', Dusty's collaboration track with the Pet Shop Boys, and the album as a whole provides a variety of upbeat and mellow tracks, making it a perfect soundtrack all year round.
Dusty's originality was clearly marked in the 1960s when...

Advantages: Atmospheric, different Disadvantages: Needs the right time of day and mood
...I don't think you'll see a bad review of this: it's hard to classify, an acquired taste and needs to be played at the right time (late at night) but it's obviously quality so it's hard to say Bad Things.
Her last album "Nolita" was the same: I don't play it often, but when I do it's late at night and I always enjoy it. It's atmospheric and almost sensual. Air claimed their last album was one for playing to while, er, love was in the air, and this is coming from a similar place.
(Just to make it clear: I play "Nolita" while I'm reading, for which it is equally suited. (For the linguists, where "Nolita" was a mixture of French and English language compositions reflecting Keren Ann's cosmopolitan background - Israeli-born of Dutch and Russian heritage, currently residing in New York and Paris - "Keren Ann" is sung only in English...

...Now this is really nice. It's a mostly live album without all the pitfalls that 'live' often brings and that's because Ann Peebles is fantastic and the band matches her. The smoky edged Soul in Ann's voice, which has matured since her seventies 'Hi' recordings, shines all the way through this album, speaking of experience and an un-named wisdom that is there in all real Soul music.
This the kind of timeless album that will push classic Soul music further towards the acceptability and credibility that Jazz has enjoyed for so long. Ann performs a few of her classics, including the sublime 'I'm Gonna Tear Your Playhouse Down' and of course 'I Can't Stand The Rain' both done in a different style to the original. She does a wonderful version of her 'I'm So Thankful' and the medley of 'Steal Away/I still Love You' is superb. This album...
