Dear Ciao members and Linkin Park fans,

My first Ciao test report ever will be on >A tribute to Linkin Park<, a CD by various artists which you will find listed below in the track listings.
[Please don't be too hard on my English, as my maternal language is German ^_^°
...But let's get back to the report!]

As said in the title, the CD is tributed to the American Nu Metal band Linkin Park which inspired the CD (as all of the tracks are simply cover versions of their own hits, in fact), whereas the band itself was not engaged in the process of CD making (and I'm not even sure whether they are informed about its existence at all...).

*****
The songs:
*****

äöüß
01. Crawling >> Fredco's Demon Version <<
Mixed by Fred Coury, Nashville (as #9)
Running time: 4:17
The song is very close to the original Linkin Park version of "Crawling" - at some stages you would even think it's not somebody else but Chester himself who's singing!
Nice song: 8 out of 10 on my personal music taste scale ^_~

äöüß
02. With you >> Sinister Version <<
Mixed by Julian Beeston, Glendale (as #7 and #11)
Running time: 3:37
The true Linkin Park fans among you will know the typical DJ Mr. Hahn style, which is "interpreted" (or shall I say covered?) here rather badly. The difference sticks out in a clear, horrible way, destroying the original sound.
Bad remix of a good song: Only 1 out of 10 on my scale

äöüß
03. High Voltage >> Razed In Black Version <<
Mixed by Romell Regulacion, Baverly Hills (as #10)
Running time: 3:50
This song is a bad mix of Hip Hop, Rap and Techno music.
Another bad remix of a good song: Therefore again only 1 out of 10

äöüß
04. Runaway >> Dkay.Com Version <<
Mixed by Jurgen Engler, Austin
Running time: 3:23
Disappointing voice, accompanied by rather untalented musicians.
2,5 out of 10

äöüß
05. My December >> Dead Girls corp. Version <<
Mixed by Toddy for Deadzone Sound Design, Hollywood
Running time: 4:23
The original version of My December is one of my favourite Linkin Park songs ever!
The first 20 seconds of the remix are pretty much the same as the original LP track. The track has been remixed by Linkin Park several times already (you can find them for example on their Reanimation CD - as you might know), all of which are A LOT better than this "Dead Girls corp. Version"! The singer sound very different from Chesters voice, plus I don't like his "interpretation" too much.
It's said that a good original can never be remade in a bad way - but this theory should finally be proven wrong by that remix!
Yet 4 out of 10 in honour to the original...

äöüß
06. Papercut >> Razor Version <<
Mixed by Bob Goodfellow, London, England (so he's one of you fellas ;-) )
Running time: 3:04
The remix is closer to the original than the songs before. In my opinion, the singer's voice, the melody and sound of the song are o.k.
7 out of 10

äöüß
07. Place for my head >> Joolz Version <<
Mixed by Julian Beeston, Glendale (as #2 and #11)
Running time: 4:46
Untalented singer, but the music is o.k.
Altogether 7 of 10

äöüß
08. One step closer >> Leather Fire Version <<
Mixed by Father Snapper, Berlin, Germany
Running time: 2:36 (shortest track)
While the singer's voice sounds completely different from the one of Chester, the song isn't too bad at all.
8 of 10

äöüß
09. In the end >> Forward to Death Version <<
Mixed by Fred Coury, Nashville (as #1)
Running time: 4:53
Again one of my favourite Linkin Park songs. I don't like the beginning of the cover version at all, yet it gets better as the song goes on.
5 of 10

äöüß
10. Forgotten >> Razed in Black Version <<
Mixed by Romell Regulacion, Beverly Hills (as #3)
Running time: 3:23
Rather Techno than Rock, yet the difficult attempt to cover this song did not end up in a complete mess.
7 out of 10

äöüß
11. Pushing me away >> Dictated Version <<
Mixed by Julian Beeston, Glendale (as #2 and #7)
Running time: 4:46
Again the voice is rather poor, yet you get a hint of how the original version might have been - at least.
6 out of 10

äöüß
12. By myself >> Fixer Version <<
Mixed by Psychic Vision, San Francisco
Running time: 3:09
Again the CD's customary problem: Nice sound, but horrible voice.
5 out of 10

äöüß
13. Points of Authority >> Dj Chiller Vs. Big Ed Version <<
Mixed by David Foster and Eddy Knight, Los Angeles
Running time: 3:17
Again a rather ad remix of a good song: Only 1 out of 10. A better (true LP) remix can also be found on the Reanimation CD, released in 2002.

--> If my song descriptions left you with some questions (and I'm sure they might ^_~) you can also listen to the songs on the amazon homepage to get a better idea of the songs ^_^

My personal "scale" should not be understood as a scale for how much I like the song discussed >in general<, but for displaying how much it >reflects< the original Linkin Park song version, according to my taste.

The cover / CD case:
*****

As you can see on the Ciao picture, the cover shows a small head of a male person (but not depicting one band member in particular). Around his head there are several sunbeams to be seen. Main colours used are grey and brown (as on the original Hybrid Theory cover), while the title is written in black.
Even one of the original Linkin Park fonts is used (it's like the Hybrid Theory one, actually).
You can find a short booklet (of four pages) inside the CD case which doesn't really contain a lot of information besides the actual track listings.
The CD itself shows the same picture as the first booklet page.

My opinion:
*****

In an Amazon review I read that the CD might rather be called a "Linkin Park Karaoke Night" - which comes very close to the sound of the tracks, which appear to be unprofessionally made by fans, but not musicians. Unfortunately I only read this after having bought the CD on Ebay in a desperate act of sheer fan collection completion.
As it turned out, it was a complete waste of money - and I truly wouldn't recommend buying the CD to anyone!
It might be interesting only for true fans anyway, and IF you are a true fan then this will disappoint you deeply! I guess there are hundreds of fans and pass-time karaoke singers out there who have better voices than the guys performing on the CD. Even the sound quality is very disappointing at some stages, as some of the songs sound as if they were recorded inside a tin... But the sound quality itself should sound professional at least, as many of you will agree.

A "long-run enjoyment" quality is hardly existing at all, as I heard the CD only twice so far (and believe me I bought it SOME time ago!) and since then the CD enjoyed a good life, resting on my CD shelf. In total, the CD gets one poor Ciao star from me, and if you should ever come across someone selling the CD - better not buy it!! ^_~

After all, I do recommend you to buy the original Linkin Park CDs, such as >Hybrid Theory< or >Meteora<, and wishing you a "happy listening" I am now at the end of my first Ciao report! ^_~

Thanks a million for your comments!

You have obviously taken a great deal of time and effort to review this award and therefore I have given you an E. I found your individual ratings for each song really helpful also. Don't think I'll be buying the CD though. x

And... When are Linkin Park gonna do something new instead of re-releasing re-mixes and rubbish like that!

C_W_Monkey 18.12.2005 20:06

you have a unique approach to reviews, it's good, keep it up!
