"The Trick To Life":

Background:
The Hoosiers consist of three members, Irwin Sparkes, Martin Skarehndahl and Alfonso Sharlando, hailing from Exeter, Reading and Stockholm. The band were formed when Sparkes and Sharlando, old college mates, met with ex-Swedish fireman Martin Skarendahl ( a studio engineer) in London.
The band have only been a known entity within the past year, bursting onto the scene with the insanely catchy and melodic "Worried About Ray". Their more recent follow-up single, "Goodbye Mr. A" was also critically acclaimed as a new brand of pop-funk-rock and paved the way for the intro of their debut album, "The Trick To Life". The band cite some of their main influences as being the likes of The Cure and The Flaming Lips, and delving into the musical mayhemic melodies of the album, it is apparent in some tracks.
Stylistically, the band have incorporated a cartoon humourism to their identity, with outfits reminiscent of 70's colour and Scooby Doo films (check out the video to "Worried About Ray").
Prior to the release of this, their debut album, the Hoosiers have been making a name for themselves on the tour circuit (Summer 2007), making the anticipation of "The Trick To Life" even greater.
"The Trick To Life":
1. Worried About Ray": Aptly the debut, and arguably best release of the two from the Hoosiers so far, "Worried About Ray" has enjoyed a 3-month long stint in the charts. The infectious chorus-line, combined with the edgy (slightly rock) guitar intro, and Supertramp style beat, gives a song notably about paranoia, a humourous, cartoon-pop style which will have you bouncing along in the confines of your living room when you think nobody is watching.
2. "Worst Case Scenario": The Hoosiers have a knack for coating the negative in 70's-esque funky pop candy-floss and delivering it with catchy melodies and falsetto vocals (in parts). "Worst Case Scenario" (if you can actually pay attention to some quite interesting lyrics) is about a man who can never crack a smile. This song again has elements of the ELO/ Supertramp kind of funk on a more up-tempo scale.
3. "Run Rabbit Run": The Hoosiers do actually explore a darker, more indie side to their sound and this song is perhaps one of the best examples. Described by critics as a sounda-like of Radioheads' OK Computer, the song portrays the more serious side of The Hoosiers. Nice accoustic accompaniement.
4. "Goodbye Mr. A": The second single from the debuting band, "Goodbye Mr. A" follows on from "Worried About Ray" retaining the infectious guitar riffs and bouncy vocals. The manic, slightly loony organ intro makes way for another jumpy beat, moulding into the catchy high vocals. Superb fun and funky.
5. "Cops and Robbers": Reminiscent of The Cure, "Cops and Robbers" incorporates an interesting bassline and a wrestle with indie-rock that the band totally pull off.
6. A Sadness Runs Through Him: Accoustic, melancholic and reminiscent of the likes of Razorlight, the Hoosiers show off their more serious side.
7. Clinging on For Life: Amazing vocals, and possibly one of the only real Hoosier love songs on this album, its sweetness and integrity will have you questioning whether it is a Hoosier's track.
8. Everything Goes Dark: The track starts off mean and moody, and melts into an up-tempo medley of rockiness, that likens the band to more recent indie contributors such as The Kooks or Killers.
9. Killer: A ruminating, moody piece with a catchy chorus, it's an electronic funk romp of a track, and a good beat climber as the album reaches its climaxial final tracks and best demonstrates the strong influence of The Cure, with this Love Cats-esque number.
10. The Trick To Life: The title track to the album explores the more indie root to the Hoosier sound, with rocky overtones and powerful vocals.
11. Money to be Made: A pensive, slow track, that unfortunately seems to have been misplaced in terms of track order. The band would have done well to add this to the more mellow section of the album, and end on more of a climaxial track like Killer.
12: The Feeling You Get When... is a hidden track at the end of the album and appears out of place given the structuring of the rest of the tracks. "The Feeling You Get When..." is a culmination of symphonic dischord and chaos, with a bit of brass and string thrown in. It's like an unplanned science experiment with potentially explosive and un-foreseen after effects. The track does leave you in a slightly bewildered frame of mind.
The Hoosiers' debut album has met with ALOT of critical sniping and recieved less than half-hearted reviews from some so-called music analysts who could only deliver a two-line statement on a whole album. In reviews they have stated that The Hoosiers have no originality and are just rip-off soundalikes, and yet they follow the "safe brigade", older, established indie bands who are just recreating the same old blurb from 3-5 years ago. It may be good, but it isn't different, and surely thats what embracing music is about? True, the cartoon-like humour incorporated by The Hoosiers has been done time and again, but to say they are comparable to the likes of a commercial creation like Mika is more than an insult, it's diarrhoea on the yellowest scale. The Hoosiers bring experimental elements to their album, lyrically divulging alternative expressions to the love lost clap-trap spewed out by most bands. Sure they may sound similar in respect to their influences but then who doesn't? Razorlight, Travis, Keane, all good bands but all delivering a sameness we are used to.
The Hoosiers have debuted with an eclectic collective of alternative tracks, and for a band starting out they have excelled where others fail. I failed to find any "fillers" on this album, each track is unique and takes the album in a multitude of directions.
Advantages: great vocal talent, Excellent instrumentals Disadvantages: poor end to the album
...Track 10 - The Trick to Life
------------------------------------
Rather Jeff Buckley/Nik Kershaw inspired at the beginning but it soon kicks into a more powerful beat and the instrumental in the background is lot stronger. This track has a very strong 'Indie' feel to it and again Irwin's vocals are great and unlike the high pitched vocals are pleasant to listen to rather than chandelier shattering… a good track.
Track 11 - Money to be Made

If inserted into a computer it comes up with a title page where you can play the CD or view hidden features. The hidden feature includes a Bonus Track - The feeling you get when…which is a very peculiar track leaving you slightly bemused. The track is interesting though but I can see why they hid it :-p

...released their debut album "The Trick to life" this very CD I'm reviewing quite recently and yet despite having had their first single released originally just through the net ("Worried about Ray") reaching #15 on downloads alone (peaking at #5 when the single was released on CD). We'd all heard the song and it'd got into all our heads despite many of us asking who they were. Well The Hoosiers are a british-seweedish band (members are from Exeter, ... ...could become. 10/10
"The trick to life", sadly this song started in a way that threw Busted straight into my head (=/ damn), before the percussion kicks in (Charlie Simpson isn't fit to hold Alfonos's Jock strap, to parapharse the great Larry Holmes) as the song swiftly leads into fun indie rather than "punk-pop-crap" with a catchy and semi humourous lyrical hook. Despite this it isn't upto the standards of many of the albums tracks. 7/10

"The Trick to Life" is more serious and well worth listening to, but my favourite of these is "Worst Case Scenario", as I think the lyrics are clever. As with most of the Hoosiers songs, the topics are more interesting than the usual 'boy/girl relationship' or 'night out' written about in most ...

Advantages: Fantastic debut with every song being original and catchy Disadvantages: Not completely original, catchy but not groundbreaking lyrics
From hearing the wonderful single ''Worried About Ray'', I knew the Hoosiers were set for big things. This catchy and melodic tune was soon making itself known to the indie-pop fans. Even though no one knew who this mysterious band was, everyone loved it. With their next single, ''Goodbye Mr A'' getting into the top 10, people expected big from their debut album, and they were given what they deserved.
The album provides sharp and catchy tunes in ... ...mixed in with slower emotive songs with ''Run Rabbit Run'' and ''A Sadness Runs Through Him'' before sending the listener into the depths of the phenomenal instrumental finale, ''Money To Be Made'' and with the superiority of this stupendous debut, this is exactly what they'll be making for many years to come. ...
