The Unholy Trinity

Advantages: Powerful, moving, atmospheric, gives good cross-section of band's early years
Disadvantages: Raw style may not appeal to some fans of bands later work.

'Trinity' is a collection of Yorkshire gothic doom legends My Dying Bride's first three EPs, released between 1991 and 1994. The first three tracks are from 'Symphonaire Infernus et Spera Empyrium', consisting of a mix slow and sludgy doom and mid-to-fast-tempo passages of unashamedly raw and uncomplicated rumbling death metal. The songs offer up some incredibly guttural and sickening growls courtesy of frontman Aaron Stainthorpe and have an ominous and claustrophobic feel, whilst the lumbering doom sections are accompanied by funereal violin. The whole thing has a deep and oppressive groove to it, and represents the band at their most coarse and brutal. The next three tracks are taken from the band's 'The Thrash of Naked Limbs' EP, and here the emphasis is more on despondent, languishing riffs and more prominent sombre violin ...

Review of Trinity - My Dying Bride

Shows My Dying Bride in their prime

Advantages: Great video and audio quality and great performances, loads of content
Disadvantages: None

'For Darkest Eyes' documents Yorkshire doom merchants My Dying Bride's 1996 performance in Krakow, Poland, offering ten live tracks spanning their (then) career. The video and audio quality is excellent, and the band put in a great performance too. There are plenty of camera angles onstage and off, including a roving camera that swoops down from above the audience from time to time. The video was recorded back when the band lineup still included Martin Powell on violin, adding consideral emotional power to the songs (after his departure the band would replace his parts with keyboards, which did the job but was never the same). The guitars, drums, keyboards, violin and vocals are well-balanced, with each being clearly audible throughout, and singer Aaron Stainthorpe is as melodramatic and tortured a frontman as ever, adopting theatrical ...

Review of My Dying Bride - For Darkest Eyes (DVD)

My......Dying.......Bride

Advantages: Good amount of footage
Disadvantages: Some footage is bad quality

This review is maybe a little bit pointless, as if you are interested in My Dying Bride, you are probably too Doom to want to read this (And before anyone starts, they are doom and not posers). But anyway, I shall continue. Music DVDs are a hard thing to talk about, because at the end of the day, you either like the band and want thier DVD or you don't, I know of not one person that would want to check out a band so go and buy thier DVD! but I will do my best to give as good as review as I can. MAIN CONTENT The main content of the DVD is broken up into two main sections, both easily accessible on the interactive menus. The two sections are Promotional Videos, which may not feature thier best songs, but then again, it would be hard to make a music video for some of the really slow songs! Stand out videos you can watch ...
